Would you take a downlevel given how competitive the PM job market is right now? Example: laid off L7 accepting L6 or laid off L5 accepting L4
A lot of PMs are dead weight and usually make my job harder, not easier.
And most SWEs just write glue code and could be replaced by someone in india or south america for 1/6th the price
Interesting how devs think PMs are dead weight, yet their senior leadership teams spend millions and millions of dollars employing PMs every single month.
If you’re super high up you can still make a lot dropping down. If i got laid off now i’m only at 240-280k range ao could down level to big tech
No idea what you wrote
A good PM is never jobless
Said someone till they lost their job in this market.

Was at meta before took a big cut but got a almost the same base ($10k lower)
The tech market is cyclical. The pm market will recover in 2 years given previous patterns I hope.
“I hope”
Startup folded. Did not work for 15 months. Not cause I refused jobs. Simply brutal job market. Tons of applications, few interviews, no conversion. Since a couple of months I landed a short term role. More modest job title on paper but 15% more salary than before. Happy is a big word, but at least I'm not at home getting bored. And it's much easier to talk about my current role or the role I just completed vs my last role over a year ago...
Are you a PM? Did you do any contract /side gigs in the mean time? (I’m not a PM, but just curious)
I took a down level contract after I was laid off last year. I was able to join another company after a few months, back at the level I was at before the lay off
I’d rather switch industries for lower comp than down level. That can be disastrous
The corporate ladder is always available to climb if one wants that.
You should not because that's what their end goal is. But you might have to if you need money
