Are managers aware of salaries in other companies?

I got an offer from Microsoft and told about it to the manager. It looked like he was surprised. The TC difference was 50%. This is in Europe Current Cisco TC: ~$100k Next Microsoft TC: ~$150k I wonder if it was possible to get such a financial promotion without searching for another job whilst working in the same company (Cisco)?

I was at Cisco in the US (top performer) and had a TC ~180K. I loved the team but took a random amazon interview for giggles and got a 270K offer. I asked my Cisco manager for something close. And they said they tried but couldn't get it close enough. So, they will try but no guarantees. But be sure you trust your manager, after this they might see you as a flight risk

Thanks, a great example. I suppose it is difficult to know your market value without asking the market.

Lot of managers who are not planning to move are not aware of the salary outside. They may know the market is hot but they may have not spend time to research the exact salary bump.

Yes. They are aware. They pretend, as if they don't know.
