Applied for atleast 50 companies in Boston Area(last week) from small to large. Didn't even get one single call yet. Should I give more time or assume no one wants me. I have 5+ years of experience in embedded low level development. My major is Comp sci, proficient in C/C++. @Qualcomm @Boston
The problem was going the embedded low level route for 5 years. Now you pay the price
So what's the fix?
Learn proper back end engineering and network
Previous embedded engineer from Qualcomm (left about 6 months ago). I didn't have an issue getting calls but the only ones I got were where recruiter contacted me via LinkedIn and not the ones I applied to. Make sure your LinkedIn/resume has the right keywords
Specifically looking for Boston area. Would that be the issue ?
Maybe. The number of calls have tripled since I made the move (combination of Apple + bay area, don't know what impacted more) But while I was at QC, I did get calls from all the FAANG companies. I did have 3 calls from companies in Boston too but those didn't work well because no one was offering relocation
No call doesn’t mean you’re not good. Just that those recruiters don’t understand or having to many resumes to process. Or they think you’re too good for them. As an ex, >30 small companies didn’t call me until Apple called. Don’t give up, bro. You may hire someone to help improve the resume and selectively apply to positions according to your skill. This will improve yield.
Thank you. I don't think I am not good enough. Not too very long ago I found myself in a situation where 2 VP's wanted me in their team and I had to make the final decision (but with lots of attrition in qualcomm you just have to be good enough). I just think my skills doesn't suit Boston area reqs, may be. But bay area is too expensive.
Applying online is a blackhole. Contact some people, even via LinkedIn, get a referral, network. All better than just applying online. Too dependent on recruiter reviewing resumes and hoping they understand your experience.
True. Started reaching out to people. Thanks man!!!
Build a LinkedIn profile and let them come to you. Boston has lots of companies thirsty for devs.
Online ? Online is useless. Go to job fair. Get your resume reviewed by experts. Find some referrals
