So I had a call with a recruiter from marlabs which is a service based company and he wanted to pitch me an project with samsung. So basically I would be a fulltime employee for marlabs building projects for samsung. One of my questions was how does this slowdown afftect fhen and while he acknowledged there is a slowdown, he mentioned that its actually better because normally full time employees because of their large salary and benefits as compared to service based contractors it is easy to cut them down than the employees from marlabs. I can see some valid points but I can’t tell that if that is bs. I am a student trying to be on a safe side. Can I get some advice if this would be a good choice. Obviously having worked in product based companies before masters I know the growth opportunities there but I dont mind keeping it aside while the world is in a slowdown.
If you have other options, pursue. If not take this and pursue 😀
Pure BS! During cost cutting it is much easier to cut contractor headcount. Why? It doesn’t result in bad press since the company technically didn’t layoff anyone. Once that happens your company will lay you off in a heart beat if they can’t place you somewhere else. During hiring freezes you will find more contracting opportunities because it will not be a fixed and expensive cost to the company (as hiring a full time employee) and is a simple workaround. If the pay is fine and you have nothing else then go for it. Just don’t expect to be any safer compared to a full time employee.
No they aren't safer, and in the longer run you would miss tc growth.
Contractors are paid more than FTEs and major chunk is eaten companies like Mars labs. Float your own LLC and become an independent contractor and you’ll know how high the pay is.

Lol of course the recruiter will lie to get you. Companies can much more easily cut contractors rather than layoff their own full time workers. It's not as simple as cost per head. The best thing to do would be to find full time employment at a stable, non-cyclical business, with a track record of profitability.
