Where are these illustrious FULLY REMOTE SWE tech roles that I’m always hearing about but never finding on job boards? And no, I’m not talking about “hybrid” roles where you’re required to be in the office 75% of the week “just because,” nor am I talking about the “remote BUT in the state of our office” roles. I’m talking about the alleged software tech roles that truly don’t require ANY physical on-site support. After COVID forced my company to adopt remote capabilities, the majority if not ALL of my current role’s work can be done WFH. Seldom do I have to be physically in-office to mess with the equipment or use the non-remote-capable secure spaces. Despite this, I’m still required to come in on in-office days for the full 9 hours. Today, I received a verbal warning from my supervisor that I need to communicate if I’m going to be “LATE” on in-office days (i.e., if I’m not physically in the office by 9 AM regardless if I’ve signed on and started WFH, I need to communicate this to my supervisor because she NEEDS to know my whereabouts throughout the entire workday, apparently). Afterward, I immediately started browsing LinkedIn for new roles. It’s insane the way these corporate overlords grasp at straws for any semblance of control over their employees regardless of productivity being unaffected. Especially after COVID and with COVID, RSV, and the flu going around many offices, I truly can’t fathom the desire to get everyone back in these small spaces sans masks just to make these companies feel better about their leased space. I legitimately can sit at my cube from 6 AM to 7 PM and not once be approached by anyone, some days, or not once engage in any meaningful conversation outside of small talk, yet my presence in-office is so necessary for productivity and collaboration. This turned out to be a silly little rant for me, but the question still begs, do these fully remote SWE tech roles truly exist? What companies? And do they seem likely to continue supporting full remote, or do you see that coming to an end? Thanks for coming to my TED Talk #tech #swe #remotecompanies #remote #software
Yes jfc, there are remote first companies all over the fucking place. They tend to be small / startups; with only a few exceptions you will be making far less than top tier.
