Are there any stories of people in CS becoming successful later in life?

I don’t have an impressive resume like now, and reading a bunch of the researchers at OpenAI and Google Brain and stuff it feels like all of these folks had it figured out even before undergrad - they all went to top institutions of had significant early accomplishments (unlike me). Are there counter examples? I know lots in other fields - Harry Truman comes to mind, but not CS, where Mark made FB v1 at 20 and Woz was a prolific phone phreaker in his early 20s.

I'm still discovering what I want to do and I graduated two years ago. I also wasn't that motivated in college. I think if I work hard and get more exposure, I will figure out what I want and be successful even if later in life.

Why do you care? You clearly didn't give a shit before, so what's changed now that makes you want to hope for a miracle? Don't let work define who you are; not being a brilliant cs doesn't mean you are worthless.

You’re right I think I’m up against an IQ limit here. I might be at my max potential as an SDE1 at Amazon...which is a terrifying thought... But it’s absurd to say I can’t be defined by my accomplishments, or in my case, lack thereof.

How many years of experience so you have? You sound young.

You’re at Amazon, that’s a pretty good accomplishment in itself relative to the whole industry. If you set your standards for success based on top researchers or the zuck you will always be unhappy.

Not an accomplishment compared to Airbnb :( Also the question is more that - are there any top researchers who weren’t born top researchers?

Musk is a great example

Didn’t he go to Penn and drop out of Stanford? He did start in Canada but it’s not like he was wanting for money or anything

Yeah, but that's just one step up from at some point after undergrad deciding you want to go to grad school

Edgar Degas (1834-1917), famous French artist sucked big time till his 40s. His most expensive painting “Danseuse au repos” changed hands for $37m at a Sotheby’s auction. He was 65 when he painted it.

Until you realize some of the most successful people in the world didn’t go to school, or dropped out prior to graduation. YOU define your destiny, don’t get a defeatist attitude because you didn’t get a PhD in ML from MIT.

It’s a nasty form of symbiosis. Dude who thrives on pity meets audience who thrives on giving it. It’s a perfect match made in Mordor.
