Are these salaries forever

How many years of ridiculous TC do you think we have left before the market gets so saturated by new talent that the salaries drop down significantly.

Low barrier to entry + crazy salaries = just a matter of time before supply > demand.

You can speak the same for sales. Good sales in tech companies are paid a lot more than similar tier swe.

Enjoy the ride while it lasts :(

WSJ recently ran an article that cited C-level execs saying lack of access to engineers is a bigger risk than lack of access to money Nothing is changing any time soon

Shopify Pplskills OP Oct 6, 2018

Yup also read some estimates that the demand will grow significantly over the next 10 years. Let the crazy TC flow.

Microsoft WXjebe727c Oct 6, 2018

Whoa what’s the article? Would like to read.

Oracle mickjogger Oct 6, 2018

What you guys call 'TC' aren't salaries. 'Base' salaries aren't growing fast enough, so don't take your lifestyles up with the stock markets.

Oath [object Oct 6, 2018

Only FANG pays ridiculous TC. The rest of the market doesn’t.

Oracle mickjogger Oct 6, 2018

Only FANG stocks are ridiculously high, rest of the stocks aren't. So, yes.

Lazard fin/tech Oct 7, 2018

Not just FANG.. there are a good 30-50+ companies that pay decent TC

As long as you're not at the bottom and easily replaceable, I don't think you need to worry regardless of the industry.

Microsoft 😂😜!!! Oct 7, 2018

You don't need to run faster than the bear, only need to run faster than the slowest one in the group

Lazard fin/tech Oct 7, 2018

Truth. Always try to dance with the best, never flirt with the worst.

Facebook bheat Oct 7, 2018

lol as if it’s that easy to become a decent SWE just look at the rise in number of freshmen majoring in CS for $$ and see how many eventually drop out (spoiler: a ton) also the fizzbuzz article

Interesting. Are there some stats on this?

Well put! But where do we have work that requires that much greatness? The low base salaries reflect they're not looking for greatness.

Oracle mickjogger Oct 7, 2018

You missed the point: show me a company which has high base salary and a high number of L6+ engineers. I have worked at engineer driven companies, but revenue comes from sales and marketing - whose impact is a factor of 10 to 100 more. You overestimate the value of engineers over sales and marketing.

How is TC at Shopify? Haven’t heard from you guys much here.
