I see same trends as what happened with labour jobs in Late 1980s. Companies cutting ties with their workers to travel light. They(1980s Nike, Gap, IBM and literally everyone with any manufacturing) did mass layoffs, because companies found it profitable to outsource manufacturing and focus on just branding. Right now, everyone wants to spend as little as possible on tech jobs, eliminating all mid level coding jobs and focusing on contracting it or outsourcing it to those who could automate it best. Doesn't anyone feel major tech jobs casualisation wave is near?
Manufacturing is generally less complex for an individual contributor than software is. Sure, the overall manufacturing process is complex, but a line worker’s role is usually narrow, simple and repetitive by design. It’s easy to outsource that type of job. Software is very much not like that and more difficult to outsource. Obviously it can be done, but not nearly as easily or cheaply as manufacturing. A better analogy would actually be that the outsourcing of a line worker is more akin to the creation of a serverless/lambda function. It does a specific task repeatedly and can be scaled up and down.
Makes sense!
It will happen eventually but not while tech is as valuable as it is. Scrimping on labor costs while you’re growing double digits YoY and you’re earning 7 figure revenue per engineer, is just stupid When you hit the giant fossil stage, and you’re not growing at all and your quarterly profit goals are met by “cost optimization”, that’s when outsourcing happens Every company will go at a different page, but the most valuable players in the economy aren’t there yet and that’s what matters most for setting tech worker wages
Yes. Agree. I was trying to search for numbers in the same direction.
