Are we missing out on the great AI Gold Rush?

We = SWEs who are busy working hard, getting a Tc, trying for promo, leaving little time for anything else. The most recent gold rushes were: The 2000 tech bubble. (Think Mark Cuban, pets.com, Alta vista, many many more) Web 2.0 in late 2000s (Uber, Facebook, Airbnb). Mobile Apps also in late 2000s. In each of these time frames, there were really smart engineers focused on their careers, while equally (or less) capable people were making $$$ in startups big and small. With the maturity of AI platforms on the public cloud, I think another mad gold rush is on. How do you plan on capitalizing on it? tC 450k Yoe 15 #google #meta #amazon #apple

Gold rushes are funny in that once everyone starts talking about them, they’re nearly dried up. Stabbing westward always seems like a good idea until you get there and realize reality is divorced from popular perception.

Only time can tell this. The internet was also a gold rush in the 90’s and it has completely transformed society since then. Personally, I think AI has great potential compared to something like Metaverse to stick around.

I can’t agree with this more… AI has been a thing in consumer applications for almost a decade, and it’s only going to keep growing in scope, complexity, and utility. I’m more talking about the hype cycle around generative AI… it’s reminiscent of the hype cycle around web 3, blockchain, etc. The tools matter and they are useful (and broadly used, even now) but the hype cycle makes it easy to fall prey to an overvalued company chucking around promises built around a house of cards.

AI is a tool like any other. Where’s my option for “using AI at current job?”

I can compare AI now to the internet back on 1980. Now imagine AI in decades coming similar to internet boom. It will be AI boom. https://youtu.be/szdbKz5CyhA

Back in the day, Cisco employees were using very similar sentences on AOL…

AOL: the free CD and foppy deluge. Back when they were sending burned CDs and you could continue burning files to the unwritten space. There’s probably an AOL tertiary layer in America’s landfills marking the dialup ISP saturation boundary

No, AI will be its own bubble.

100% agree. AI is a giant tool looking for users. No one is asking for an AI tool.
