Asking for pay raise

How to best approach the manager for a pay raise? Is it reasonable to say Glassdoor know your worth says I should be paid more?

Airbnb Cheskle Apr 3, 2018

Have justification, or a competing offer. It’s like when your cable or phone company raises their price for no reason, you get annoyed. They’ll have same reaction.

Glassdoor says I’m underpaid

Airbnb Cheskle Apr 3, 2018

So what? Blind says we’re all really underpaid 😛

I wouldn’t recommend the “Glassdoor approach”. If you feel you’re underpaid compared to maket rate and “deserve” one based on the discrepancy, you’ll want another offer to show you’re worth it (i.e. market is willing to pay you the market rate). If you feel your contributions are worth more in absolute terms, gather the data. Demonstrate contributions, wins, and present the data in an objection (not an emotional) way.

Glassdoor data is not accurate. However if someone interviews outside and gets an offer the other company will always give a standard bump regardless of actual worth. E.g. if someone is making 150K, the other company will offer 160K. If you are making 160K, the other company will offer 170K. How can you figure out your true worth ?

Glassdoor approach wouldn't be effective. Talk about the value you bring, not what an anonymous website says. If you had Culpepper data that might carry more weight.

As a manager, explain to me why your value to the company is worth more. Telling me that glassdoor says you’re underpaid is on par with telling me you need more money because you have expenses to cover.

CarGurus ak1011 OP Apr 4, 2018

Do you really think you can justify that you are worth more? I think, it’s too easy for the manager to prove you wrong.

Then why should your manager give you a raise? Either you’re worth more and can show why or you aren’t.

How does it work when you have offer and go to talk to your manager? What’s the likelihood that you won’t get walked out?
