I’m referring to ML-heavy DS positions (sometimes called applied scientist, quantitative engineer, full-stack DS, research DS, etc.) that typically require some type of math/science background rather than product DS or business analyst roles. I’ve only heard of applied scientists at Amazon and data scientists at Stitch Fix having higher comp than software engineers at the same level. There were a few DS roles at Meta that matched SWE comp 1:1 but I don’t think this is the case anymore. I would guess that data-heavy companies might match SWE comp (e.g. Snowflake, Databricks) but there are too few datapoints on levels.fyi to get a clear picture. I’ve thought of switching to an MLE role (which I believe is now mostly standardized as a SWE who productionizes ML models), but I don’t think I would find the work as enjoyable. #datascience #machinelearningengineer
