Atlanta vs Seattle

Hi Blind, I am a Korean male in my mid 20's, currently interning at Microsoft Redmond and was given a choice whether to join Azure in Redmond or Atlanta. I am thinking about choosing Atlanta and living somewhere in midtown, but after some google search, it seems like the diversity isn't good and crime is also high. For South East Asians living in Atlanta, how do you feel about living there? Just scared of hate crime (especially during COVID) since it says that there are barely any asians there. The biggest reason why I don't want to go to Seattle is because of the weather and I feel that people here a bit passive aggresive, but maybe its just me. (Edit - phrased my wording wrong) I would like to optimize social life over TC/career. I also like city life over nature. If you were me, where would you go? Also, if you can comment your reasoning below, that would be great. Thank you !! Redmond TC: 110k base 120k / 4 stocks 20k sign on Atlanta TC: 100k base 120k / 4 stocks 10k sign on

Seattle is the tech hub. Pretty easy decision.

I thought Atlanta has a lot of Koreans

In the suburbs, not in midtown.

Seattle is the tech hub but the cost of living is much lower in Atlanta. It looks like the offer is lower of Atlanta, but if you consider the cost of living, Atlanta comes out ahead. I'm still amazed how cheap everything in Atlanta is, especially the food. If you're looking to buy a house one day, Atlanta real estate is much more reasonable as well Also, crime depends on where you live. Just choose a good safe area, and you'll be fine.

Thank you for your feedback FWV, do you know if Midtown is relatively safe? There are too many mixed opinions online.

Midtown has some shady pockets but generally safe around gatech. Lots of good suburban areas though

Hi eatfresh, thank you for your feedback. I think I phrased my thoughts wrong. I actually do not care about TC or career. I'm thinking of Atlanta because of better weather and maybe people are not as passive aggresive as in Seattle. Your comment on career makes sense though

Racist spotted.

Earlier in your career it is better to be at HQ for exposure to more opportunities.

Microsoft straightbr OP May 7, 2021

Hi dcow, thank you for your feedback, the team in Azure i'm joining is the same team whether its ATL or Redmond. Would it still be better in HQ? If i plan to leave my team, I will be looking at other companies instead of internal transfers

Moveworks dCOw25 May 7, 2021

Which team is larger? Better to be wherever most of the team is.

I am an Asian and used to spend most of my weekends in Atalanta. It is great city, good neighborhood is very safe, nice weather and lots of things to do. U can see quite a few Asians here and there too. I would pick any city over Seattle easily due for weather. You can come to bayArea some day if you want the best.

Microsoft straightbr OP May 7, 2021

Hi nav, thank you for your feedback. Glad to know its actually safe there. The one reason why I didn't consider Bay Area is because almost everyone is in tech. Also, I wanted to work in MS at least 2 years to get some experience

Microsoft Hrgf72 May 7, 2021

Having lived in Seattle area for 4 years, I won't recommend it to anyone. 😂 You are right OP: both weather and people suck pretty bad in Seattle. I'd pick South any time. Just choose a good/safe place to live and you should be fine.

Microsoft straightbr OP May 7, 2021

Thank you for your feedback hrgf, I have the same thoughts as you

Microsoft xspl0iter May 7, 2021

Organizational mass is in Redmond...

Nike allonsy May 7, 2021

Seattle weather sucks but more job opportunities available there going forward. Atlanta weather is way better than Seattle, if weather matters then thr choice should be easy?

Microsoft straightbr OP May 7, 2021

Hi allonsy, thanks for your feedback. The only reason why I'm hesitating is because I'm scared of hate crime against asians especially during COVID and it says online that there are barely any asians
