Attire in tech company office

Moving to the bay area to work at a large tech company. Is the clothing really as casual as the media portrays, or is it exaggerated? Are there really people that wear tshirt, jeans, sneakers to work all the time? What does the typical employee wear? I'm coming from New York and my wardrobe currently consists entirely of button ups. I've been shopping for new clothes and realize I have no clue what kind of clothes are common and appropriate in a tech office. At what stores do you guys normally shop for work clothes?

I'm wearing t shirt, cargo shorts, and sandals today. I don't give a fuck. Nobody else gives a fuck either as long as you do your work unless your role involves face to face interaction with customers/clients/business partners etc.

You should wear your birthday suite to establish dominance

Some people refuse to wear shoes

My usual attire consists of sneakers, cargo shorts, a ball cap, and a concert graphic tee. No one bats an eyelid. I came from the East Coast as well. People are way more chill and down to Earth out here.

Yes, and some even wear shorts. Button ups are fine. Generally, an untucked Oxford, jeans, and a pair of sneakers are standard.

It’s completely casual at most tech companies in the Bay Area. You can wear T-shirt/Shirt, jeans/chinos/shorts and sneakers/slip-on/flipflops.. you can also wear what you have in your wardrobe. Usually sales, legal and media relations departments are little more formal. Rest of the company will be pretty casual.

Onesies are quite common

It’s that way at most tech companies. I worked with a guy whose standard outfit was t-shirt, shorts, and sandals, for many years. At the manager level and above, there might be a little expectation to dress a little less casual, but even there, nobody’s going to give any grief to a manager who shows up in shorts and sandals.

Buy clothes from Bonobo if you want to be taken seriously by the higher level. You don’t want to get dismissed as “just a coder” for looking too geeky. Highly recommend dressing well within the boundaries of business casual

this is good advice. if you enjoy dressing up a bit, i recommend getting some nice, single color t shirts from uniqlo or everlane. it is possible to look sharp even while wearing jeans t shirts and sneakers.
