Audible vs Bloomberg

I got an offer from Audible for SDE1 and am interviewing for Bloomberg currently. Audible offered TC ~175k/year for 4 years which I’m not sure if Bloomberg can match, so for people who work at Bloomberg, is the comp for 1YOE engineer comparable to what Audible offered? Also I checked on comp sites and saw that Bloomberg has a similar salary, but are Bloomberg bonuses given annually or is it a 1 time pay? For anyone with experience working at Audible or Bloomberg, how is the work life balance? My most important factors are compensation and work life balance so any input on that would be helpful. Thanks EDIT: I’m also in NJ where commute to Bloomberg will be 15-20 minutes longer than the commute to Audible YOE: 1 #swe #software #engineering

Bbg new grads get 175-180 easily

That’s including the sign on bonus. Do engineers get annual bonuses as well? Then I’d consider Bloomberg over Audible since the bonuses at Audible end after 2 years

Bloomberg furiousape Sep 30, 2021

Yeah check levels FYI. 175 should be the standard package to new grads

I’m assuming this is the NYC area? If so take into account Audible’s location. Pretty sure they’re only in Newark in a former church. It’s awkward which adds to commuting stress and limits where you live. Probably doesn’t have places to go to after work.

Go to Audible 100%

How often do you guys have new projects for engineers to join? I was also concerned about old tech so I asked my interviewer the same question, but he said that Bloomberg is starting a lot of new projects these days I’ve read a lot about how only SE and SSE titles exist; are compensation increases (not overall TC cause Ik other companies pay more) at least similar to other companies?

FactSet Big Baller OP Sep 30, 2021

Gotcha, it makes sense that most people would be working on legacy tech. Only 2-3% comp growth really sucks; I thought it was higher than that based on levels fyi, and the pay progression looks pretty similar to Audible. Bloomberg seems like a good place to join after a few years when I want to settle down at a chill place with good WLB

Can u plz provide the breakup of tc

Bloomberg laura57 Oct 1, 2021

That's not a very high TC. They'll most likely match. WLB is amazing, though the tech could be so-so. Not sure if audible would be better though, so I'd personally take WLB for the same TC. Oh, and we do get a bonus annually, but it might be included in the TC. Also worth noting that there's enough to learn by staying here for a couple years for great WLB and better TC before you go on to greener pastures.

Audible has been known to have good WLB so I’m not sure which company had better WLB. Can you get away with 30 hours / wk at Bloomberg?

Bloomberg kirablind Oct 6, 2021

You can get away with 3 hours a week if you are in the right team.

I’d go audible, they are basically amazon but with good WLB and culture from what I heard

FactSet Big Baller OP Oct 2, 2021

Based on many sources it seems like WLB and culture is good for both companies, but I’m getting the idea that Audible is better for growth because of Amazon resources and it’s not working mostly on legacy tech like Bloomberg is. I’m leaning towards Audible unless Bloomberg can pay at least $10k more

Yeah plus if you work on Bloomberg there are trading restrictions. Depending on how often you buy/sell stocks this would be a big factor

keep interviewing audible sucks i know many intern working in there declind the return offer

FactSet Big Baller OP Oct 2, 2021

Will do. It’s hard to decide with so many conflicting opinions but better to have both options available than only one haha
