Hi all: My friend is an audit senior at a regional firm who spent 2 years working on auditing tech start-ups from Series A to public companies. She wants to break into finance, but doesn't know what role to look for. Would a financial analyst be best, or is there a different route she should take? She'd love to to end up in Venture Capital, given her experience w/ tech start-ups. #startups #audit #vc #venturecapital
Corporate Development (business development) or FP&A
Thanks for your response! Can both of these ultimately lead to venture capital?
Corp dev is a good option if the auditing work entailed valuation. Otherwise might be hard to break in. Top MBA might be good option to otherwise get the pedigree needed for venture capital
VC is pretty tough to break into even with an applicable background - best chance would probably be going into Corp Dev or IR if she wants to work in tech finance, which would both take some work to get into coming from an audit background. If by “financial analyst” you mean working in FP&A, that really wouldn’t get her that much closer to VC. It’s a completely different career track with very little in common. Why take a detour into tech finance at all if she wants to end up in VC? Best bet would be to go straight back to business school and try to break into VC with a fresh start
Let’s say she were to go back and get her MBA, what would be her next move? What roles at a VC would be the best fit? Also, any suggestions on how to break into Corp dev from auditing?

If she's still undecided, she could go the Financial Reporting route which in my experience, was a launchpad to any sort of accounting you want to pursue (technical, core GL, or even FP&A). She could also do what I did and do internal audit first since her work in public will directly translate to an IA role (just, that she's on the opposite side of the court).
Thanks for your response! Can these ultimately lead to a role in venture capital?
Probably not
