Austin TC: 100k

How’s the tech community over there? Was wondering if it is worth staying in Texas and accepting this offer or should I move to Bay Area to find a better offer(if I do get one)

Idk about that TC but Austin is amazing

Simple if you’re young. Live in Bay Area until you’re like 25-27, then move to Austin with TC savings so you can buy a big house and settle down and don’t have to worry about being in a constant rat race in the shit hole known as Silicon Valley

What do you mean by rat race :(

The vibe in Silicon Valley is toxic like in Blind. Everyone just cares about TC and they almost never talk about things outside of tech or their careers. I love tech but outside of work, I don’t want to see billboards of Bitbucket and stuff like that everywhere. Doesn’t feel normal to me.

Bay Area is not for everyone. If you want a simple living and lead a happy life then stay back in Austin. If you like buzzing environment move to Bay Area. But don’t try to live a substandard life by living far away from work to save money and commuting everyday. Commute here sucks. You will live in a match box sized house and yeah if you think you can make $150k and save a lot more than what you can save with a $100k on Austin. You are wrong.

A salary of 100k in Austin is like a salary of at least 130k in Bay Area. Rent in Austin is 1.2k for a 1 bed apartment in bay area you don’t even rent a bedroom in a shared house. Texas does not have state tax. Keep all this when comparing offers from both places.

$100k Austin = $170k Bay Area.

No way.. ru kidding? I know cost of living is high. But 170k? Not at all. 130k in bay = 100k in austin.

Austin is awesome and the living expenses are much lower. You can live really well off of that salary. If you leave Texas you’ll be slapped with a much higher tax burden. Plus the queso is much better in Texas

You can go to the Bay Area for a short time depending on your life circumstances. If you don’t have responsibilities (family, mortgage...etc), then you should try it for a year to satisfy your curiosity. But otherwise, I would highly advise against staying in the bay too long if ur used to ATX. Lifestyle-wise, you’re just going to be in a massive downgrade over in the bay. Think about it like this - you can live in far west or arboretum area like a king off of $100k TC. But out here you will be lucky if you can afford a shared bedroom off of 100k
