I don’t understand why are people moving to Austin. I spent a few days in Austin and it sucks. Apart from one street and a lake there’s nothing else one can do. House prices are okay but apart from that I don’t see anything. I wonder what do people actually do in Austin outside of work. Just stay in their house? Am I missing something? Move to Miami not the boring concrete jungle.
Tell me you’ve never been to Austin without telling me you’ve never been to Austin.
I am from Austin and while it’s not a concrete jungle - it is boring Af
Please explain non boring place.
Good weather Great architecture Good food/restaurants Tons of activities to participate in Diverse A combination of CA weather + NYC vibes + Austin houses 😅…
@op LMAO good luck with your search 😂😂😂😂
To preface this list, any city, including Austin, is what YOU make of it. And as someone who’s moved around a bit, I’m a FIRM believer that the people are what make a place fun or not (if you only know shitty ppl in a big city like NYC, it’s gunna fucking suck). With that I’d say Austin’s full of a ton of good spirited young professionals who are just looking into do stuff and enjoy life when not at work. If you’re not someone who can just go out and make friends randomly then I’d suggest you check out the Meetup app, there’s a TON of stuff going on there. But with that here’s a few things that I or some friends in the area generally partake in: - going out: 6th street (west and east are different vibes), Rainey St, Rock Rose in the Domain. Not sure if it’s bad that there’s only “3 places” to out here. Think it’s kinda cool to have the centralized spots like that. - If you’re not a partner there’s stuff like Alamo drafthouse-esq movie theaters and places like top golf (not unique to here) that you can check out. - outdoor activities: we have a big ass park called Zilker, people chill, have their dogs, play volleyball and other stuff and people here are generally super friendly so u could totally just hop in on a game if u so choose. This isn’t unique to zilker park, there’s a ton of recreational parks around with people on the weekends especially. Cultures kinda the same. - more outdoor activities - Water stuff is BIG. Rent a kayak or paddle board downtown, one of the lakes within the limits or go down to the San Marcos area to go tubing or kayaking. Fishing/boating is a thing too. - live music?? ATX is kinda known for that so bars and parks around town in the summer literally have weekly concerts in the evenings. - annual events like ACL or SXSW. Other things about being in ATX that can be viewed as a plus: - relatively close to the other major TX cities for weekend trips - center of the country so flights anywhere domestically aren’t ever bad, or that expensive tbh. If austin just isn’t your vibe, it is what it is. It’s not a NY, LA, or SF and to expect that is foolish given it’s NOT a big city (and it doesn’t claim to be). I get there’s a lot of hype about it and hype makes it really easy to just be disappointed. But I’m sorry, to reduce this city to “just one street and a lake” seems like you’re just looking for reasons to dislike it, which again, is totally ok. If you live here hope you figure something out that works for you and you S/O ✌🏽
Love the answer. Thanks so much for details. I agree with you on ‘a city is what people make of it’. I just couldn’t relate to the vibe of Austin. May be I didn’t enjoy as one is supposed to. But again thanks so much for the details. This is very very helpful info as I weigh my move plans.
If you really have moved around then you'd know that everything that you mentioned can be found in any decently sized city. Denver, Atlanta, Nashville, New Orleans, at least 3 cities in NJ, Philadelphia, Boston, and you can just keep naming off cities with more things to do than Austin. It's better than Columbus, Ohio but it's still Austin. To answer OP's question, it's probably more boring than other cities its size but it's popular in blogs about moving out of the bay so people move there.
If you only have a few days the problem with Austin (and many American cities) is that it is so spread out. I spent 8 weeks there for work and it really gave me an appreciation for all the things it offers. But you definitely need a car and patience for Austin traffic.
Rainey, 6th, down town, west sixth, most of the east side, and the entire river loop are all a trivial walk or scoot from each other. That circle includes a ton of nightlife, entertainment, live music, outdoorsy options, excellent food, etc.
Most bars per captia of any US city
"late 20s married" I'm guessing this is your problem. So much of the things to do in Austin are geared towards young people in college or recently graduated. If you want a cheap house just find a company that will hire you remotely and find a city that you'd be happy in
What types of things are you interested in? I moved to Austin 4 years ago and I love it here.
This was bound to happen if Tech bay Area folks move there
