Hi all, I just graduated and started working at Amazon. I recently got my US license at age: 25. I’ve had an Indian DL since I was 18. I’ve decided to buy a Tesla Model Y LR but when I look at insurance quotes they are astonishingly high ~1200USD a month. I am able to rent a car for 500/month. Is there anyone here who’s been in a similar situation? Also, I’m in MA where Tesla doesn’t sell their insurance. Thanks for your help! Update: I was able to get the insurance as low as 165/month. (Full Coverage, 500 deductible) Here are a few tips: 1. Get a local insurance agent to help you. 2. Get a DL extract (from India) or equivalent, it should show good driver history for the last 6 years. 3. Use the VIN to get your final quote instead of the drop down selections.
My colleague who's single M 27, bought used tesla model 3 and even his insurance was $800 pm. He said the reason could be because you're single and there's a good chance you're going to do reckless driving. This doesn't make sense but that's how it is.
I recently got a car an Audi as an F1 student and faced the same thing. Find an insurance agent, they will drastically lower the rate. I first used GEICO who quoted me like 800 a month. Then my colleague recommended a Travelers agent, they asked for my Indian DL as well as ny degree to unlock a lot of possible discounts and eventually gave me a quote of 300 a month which was great! So just find a good trustworthy insurance agent
I was in the same boat. Recently bought a 2024 honda accord hybrid exl and was quoted the same amount as you. I went with GEICO for 6 months, paid in full and that came out to be 330/month. DM to get more info.
Car price and your driving experience in US goes into the calculation for premium. Try to optimize one or the other. Maybe also try a city thats less crowded, that might help reduce the premium.
Volvo has a lease program or something that includes insurance iirc and it's decent price
Just drive carefully without insurance

Bad advice, AMD
Fu@k Amazon
You need to be at least 28 to get a reasonable insurance premium. Try Progressive, Farmers, Century21 and see
Thing about insurance is that rates vary a lot. So you might get much better rates if you shop around. Try to get more quotes

Is this really happening in India?
Why are you buying a Tesla LR on a student visa ? At best you should go for a low cost sub 20k usd car or something used.
Im in MA so I get above 7.5k federal + 3k state incentive for that car. I’m considering that I will keep the car for 3 years and I can see 3 year old Tesla model Ys selling for 42k which is what I’m buying it for. So essentially I’m only paying for the interest on a 3Y loan (5k total) + the cost of insurance. On the other hand, my second best option is a used Toyota (~20k USD), I will still lose 5-7k in value over 3 years + 2k on interest + cost of insurance (I know this will be significantly lower) Overall at the end of 3 years, Tesla isn’t costing me that much more if anything at all. Even if its value drops by 5k more I’m okay spending that amount to drive a new car for 3 years.
That’s not why I commented. Your on a damn visa ie: it will expire and h1b is a lottery nothing is guaranteed. And what’s to say teslas will be worth that much in 3 years ?
