Avoid FANGs

Do not join FANGs. They are bureaucratic mess.. if you are a swe worth your salt, go find a start up or another place, build skills in fintech or robotics, or AI.. FANGs will kill your career by putting you in crappy roles.. and before you know it, your current skills will be outdated and you will slave along at FANGs as generalist..

You had me until ā€œjoin fintechā€ā€¦ lol

Google u__ OP Dec 23, 2022

Are you suggesting Jamie Dimon is faking when he says that fintech is biggest threat to JP Morgan Chase? Or are you equating crypto with fintech?

Meta seƱor PE Dec 23, 2022

Maybe it is, but if your main motivation for going there is having less bureaucracy, your gonna have a bad time. Also, WLB there is way worse than at FAANG

Amazon wawY45 Dec 23, 2022

TC?

Amazon jebfezos Dec 23, 2022

That is oddly accurate, but the conclusion is shit. Itā€™s just a job man

Google u__ OP Dec 23, 2022

Life shouldn't be "just a job"

Google u__ OP Dec 23, 2022

And if it's just a job, then let's do something that is more fulfilling and fun than being part of a crap bureaucracy..

Goldman Sachs brain4488 Dec 23, 2022

Disagree, it's team dependent for sure which one can switch. FAANGs pay high and have great benefits.

Google u__ OP Dec 23, 2022

Pay and benefits follow skills and expertise

Google u__ OP Dec 23, 2022

Also, FANGs do not pay well once you cross 35.. more experience gets you nothing as generalist..

> FAANGs will kill your career Good one

UrMom! Dec 23, 2022

If you want to have a good life and retire with 10-12m net worth then it wonā€™t But if you want to achieve more and are actually ambitious then yes it can be a career killer

Amazon whyIsItGon Dec 23, 2022

Just stop. Working at the most successful software companies working with the largest scale is not going to kill your career. Get a fuckin grip.

Red Hat vzmbx Dec 23, 2022

can you explain specifically what you mean by this? iā€™ve seen multiple people say the same but looking for examples. What do you mean your current skills will be outdated? Like the tech is outdated?

Google u__ OP Dec 23, 2022

You will be a ML heavy person. Hiring manager will lie on the face and tell that they do ML work.. by the time you join, some of ML project moved to another team.. you will be given python script.. manager will say its very important for company and very impactful.impactful.. you will be chill. 2 years later, ML tech has moved on, you are still doing python scripting with trivial ML work.. then divergence continues until one day you realize that your ML skills are totally outdated..

Meta harldfinch Dec 23, 2022

Oddly accurate. Iā€™m an MLE at Meta and since joining my knowledge of ML has atrophied while my knowledge of how to write a document that looks good for performance evaluation has 10x-ed. we barely even touch Python, most changes I make are config-level

Gemini MzBJ21 Dec 23, 2022

you need the bureaucracy when you create a company and get to the scaling stage. sadly its a necessary evil

Google u__ OP Dec 23, 2022

No you don't, example, twitter.. bureaucracy gone and features minting out every week

Gemini MzBJ21 Dec 23, 2022

lol!!! you think elon isnā€™t a bureaucrat.

Amazon mmllmm Dec 23, 2022

If faang is killing your career, you must be so clumsy, thus, you deserve.

Apple fan of chatgpt? Per your logic, those who left fang for chatgpt shouldn't have!

Delivery Hero pvwa84 Dec 24, 2022

Google, you do realise ChatGPT is like 0.001% of startups out there. You have like over 99% chance of working at scrappy startup. I have , and I know it's worse. No money, no skill, just generalist stuff that doesn't grow your career.
