If there are layoff, would Azure be down the queue comparing to slower growth orgs like Windows? Because the demands are higher? Same question for G and AMZ.
Why do you think MSFT would layoff ? I mean they have been doing exceptionally well over the last few yrs due to azure. Azure was once a distant second to AWS but looking at their growth and potential to capture the enterprise market, I doubt if they would touch azure unless they have a few teams or orgs that are doing some superficial stuff that can be done without.
Economy can tank
Can’t really say how they would start combing. I was at msft for 4 yrs before joining amzn. There were some layoffs back then as well. Didn’t make a lot of new though. Guess it was in 2018. My manager then said the normal practice is that the managers would be asked to pick the least performing candidate(s) in the team and they would be let go. Tbh always they start from least performing employees. I was working for azure compute engine at that time. I am sure my team had a lot of slackers. They were smart but just didn’t work like others. Surprisingly the entire org wasn’t touched. A sister org had minimal impact. The ones that saw a lot was windows. There were rumors that some employees who were in msft for like 20+ yrs were asked to retire/leave irrespective of their performance. But they were just rumors. My lead then said around 250 were impacted in redmond. There was no blind then and the news wasn’t published in any news portals. So numbers were not known to anyone. Considering the size of msft even then, 240 wasn’t a big number. Probably why it didn’t make much news.
In amzn I guess the first org to be impacted is alexa. Too much fat for the amount of revenue they generate. There are a lot of teams in e-commerce that are mostly just maintaining very old legacy systems that can be done away with. So imo I think it would be alexa->e-commerce(includes all their experimental physical store technologies)->aws
If there is a targeted layoff based on org performance etc yes. If it's across the board rif due to recession probably not
But only msft veterans can confirm my theory
If org perf is looked at, Office - Windows- Azure in terms of revenue. So Azure will so be cut down faster
