B1/B2 directly after H1B expires

My H1B is expiring very soon and i need to leave the US but i have unfinished business. In anyones experience can i exit the US and immediately (next day) reenter on a B2 visa as a tourist so i can finish my business?

What exactly is this unfinished business? If it's something like selling a house, I'd say it's possible to come back on B2 and get it done.

Why do you want to leave the country and come back on tourist visa... Just apply for change of status application - h1b to b1/b2 tourist visa. As long as the application is pending, you can live in usa and take care of your unfinished business. These days, change of status applications are taking 8+ months.

I am planning to do this, but not sure how my record is affected by being out of status till decision is made

This is presuming you already have a B2 visa or can qualify for ESTA .Can attest to doing this . Make sure you have” residential ties to home country” and a reasonable date of exit of US to mention if they ask . And also 6$ for new I94 if entering by land .

Just return to your home country apply for B2...tell the real reason for the visa officer and you will get a 10 years multiple entry B1/B2. Come whenever you want.
