How’s this Metaverse thing?

Feel like a boomer, but what even is the metaverse? I had a HTC Vive in 2016. It was really cool but it gave me headaches and resolution needed improvements. Now that meta is selling this thing hard, what even is it? Is resolution super good these days, could I use it as this 360 degree view for my monitor? Or has not much changed
