Boston area Senior software engineer 1 Base salary: 105k Signing bonus:20k Relo: 8k YOE: 4.5 years Is this fair or lowball? #tech
I didn’t know Raytheon gave out signing bonuses like that, that seems really good The base seems typical defense, I make $90k with 2 yoe as a SWE in LCOL but defense doesn’t adjust well to HCOL areas so it seems typical. SWEs don’t get paid more than other engineering disciplines in defense really, just a little bit comparable to other more technical engineering disciplines. Do you know what level senior SWE is at Raytheon if they do a 1-5/6 leveling?
8k for relocation.... do you own a home?
Do you really really want to live in Boston? With your yoe, you should take a leave of absence to study for faang. If you get in, you double or triple your salary. I faced a similar choice when I had 4 years of experience back in 2010. Instead of trying for Facebook which was pre ipo or other tech companies, I transferred to another Lockheed location because I wanted to live there. Made some friends and met some nice people, but really bad move in terms of salary.
Boston is pretty cool, I’m doing the same but just using defense to pay for CS degree while I’m actively interviewing. I won’t have the degree finished but screw it. I really just slack at my job to make time to study. Also, it’s pretty hard to get interviews rn so that’s something else to consider. I got interviews at about 8 good companies I’m pursuing rn but that’s after hundreds maybe a 1000 apps.
Oh I see, well that’s good you’re getting the cs degree. Hopefully that helps. It might help to get some referrals to companies also.
Which Raytheon? If in Andover or Woburn I wouldn’t live in Boston. Move north, Burlington, or even southern NH, or one of the towns around Andover. Have kids? Better cities with good schools etc 9/80 schedule and an easy WLB
I would say the base is a bit low. You can bluff offers at Raytheon recruiters never confirm or ask for proof. You can squeeze more base and signing about (+5K)
Stay in denver bruv
Seems ok for defense, but low for software overall. What’s your tc now?
My TC is 99k in Denver area
I don’t think it’s worth the trouble of going through that transition. Taking a new job requires a lot of learning, and moving takes time. Try to just get into a software company.
