Someone I know got an offer from a medium sized company. On their resume they said they worked somewhere for three months longer than they actually did. Are they screwed? When they fill in their employment history should they be honest or put what was on the resume? Do the background check companies look at resume or just what information you give them? Thank you very much in advance.
you or the someone can be honest enough and correct it.
Yeah that’s probably best, so just be honest on the background check? I’m thinking maybe the background check company won’t look at the resume?
they will not look at the resume. But, the company can look any time for any audit purpose.
once they like the candidate, they don't go back for 3 months
I think it depends on the why. Did they make a mistake (and shorten the time spent at another place in the processs) or was it a typo and the dates overlapped or did they intentionally try to cover something like a gap in employment? I'd react differently depending on why the discrepancy exists.
Just wanted to fill in full years I guess
Depends on the total length of time at the position. Example: If you extended a previous employment to 4 months when it was actually 1 month, that is a problem. Regarding background checks, companies are typically entitled to the start/end dates so it’s best that your formal application is accurate (your resume less so).
I will tell them that thank you
Won’t the background check share this with the employer, and the employer will notice the discrepancy in resume?
So would it look even worse/would they get caught if they put what’s on their resume in the background check? Thanks for the advice everyone.
