Bad bets on employment

So about three years ago I had two competing offers from Company A and Groupon. The offer was about the same for both but Company As base was 5k more and the RSUs higher but with a 4 year vest. I turned down Company A because - they made me a Staff offer without even seeing me write any code whatsoever -the VP seemed to not value testing at all and the whole thing seemed fast and loose -existing employees seemed super bored and there was no energy on the team. Long story short, I chose Groupon, it tanked, and Company A has since more than tripled its stock value which would have made me a millionaire by now. I can tell myself the job would have sucked for the above reasons but still a tough pill to swallow Anyone else have any stories where they missed out on something? Come join me in my misery! 😛

To be fair company A might have tanked if you joined

Lol well they DO call me the harbinger of ruin

Lol i was thinking exactly that! 😂 But a nicer way to think is that due to OP’s self sacrificial decision picking Groupon, company A could hire someone who matched what they needed and got to where they are.

My worst bet was joining amazon (despite having other faang+ offers) because I thought blind was “extreme and not realistic”. And it shouldn’t be “that bad” oh boy was I wrong ahaha. Left that place real quick (It wasn’t the pip culture or anything everything was flat out miserable and everyone so joyless)

There’s a lot of denial and cognitive dissonance that goes on in when an amazon offer is made. Those dollars aren’t worth it folks!

There is a lot of luck involved. Don't overthink it. Live in "What is" and not "What if".

When I was graduating I chose between two Series B startups and a well known HFT firm paying over $300K. One of the startups is now worth $4B, the other is defunct. Guess which of the three offers I picked?

Took a job at a tech giant out of college instead of continuing to work with my friends on our startup. 3 years later, they sold our company and are financially set for life. They were nice enough to cut me a percentage, but life really do be a box of chocolates sometimes. I took the money and invested some of it into some fintech startups that my friends are now advising. In the end we all have to commit to one choice or another, so we may as well find happiness in the choices we made.
