What is the typical day to day work of a Software Development Manager at Amazon outside of people management? YOE: 12 TC: 175K
You must put at least 20% of your ICs on PIP each year, preferably ones who joined when stock was high so they can be replaced at lower cost
That’s not good and I don’t think Amazon does that, also this is part of people management. I am still wondering on what their typical day to day activity looks like.
It’s 10 not 20% and you can fight your upper management but he can fight back because the director still needs to reduce 10% of .org on pip
It’s very metric based and cult like . You need to be ready to throw ur team under the bus to survive .
I would never do that to my team. Does it happen more so often because of the tight deadlines or bad planning?
Both. And the point about metrics is very true. Amazon is really into metrics. If you don't have numbers that tell a story then you don't have a story.
Beat the team up with 2 different LPs everyday, coincidentally it takes a full week to go through all of them

Everyday you have to drink a gallon of Kool aid and spout off LPs like it's gospel.

What is the usual expectation from the team? I definitely want to help out my team wherever I can
Get in way before the SDEs roll in around 10:00-10:30. Go to meetings all day and not be able to pay attention because you are getting chimes to death. Then stay after all of your SDEs have left so you can respond to chimes, read emails and do all of the other things that SDEs are too important for. Then after all of that, you find 20% of the team to put on the dev list, then add more work to "coach" them since they are on the dev list. Basically meet all day and then get your work done after all the meetings. Repeat every day and you have the typical week.
