#severance #layoff #microsoft Had a decent connect in Nov. My first-time-in-role manager comes back from parental leave mid Jan, asks me for my contributions in last 6 months AGAIN. Starts to document 1on1s with follow-up notes. And in less than 4 weeks, with exception of 1 genuine error, has tried to make frivolous reasons that aren't even true (I have ample proof) and declared my performance not satisfactory for the level and is asking to submit another connect within a week. I'm considering pushing back on not doing a new connect and escalating up the chain. Any point in doing so? Also, I'm considering resigning than having to go through this mental torture. Any suggestions? IMO this is a new low for Microsoft. Never imagined management at Microsoft can fall so low in ethics to save pennies...
Don't resign whatever you do.
But I'm so exhausted with this BS and it is draining me mentally.
Senior SDE?
Iâve experienced very similar but in a different org. There will be no justice for you if you fight it. Your skip is very unlikely to be your ally. HR will absolutely not be your ally. Internal transfer is the only way to stay at Microsoft, if thatâs even what you want. But with as fast as your manager is moving, internal is highly unlikely to happen fast enough. I wouldnât quit. Interview heavily externally and wait for your manager to wrap up his game plan with you. You probably have only a few weeks before the 1:1 where someone from HR attends the call. Donât expect a severance, because itâs not a certainty at all. But you at least get your paychecks and your stock vesting while you are interviewing.
Have been in this situation. My manager went from letâs talk about your promo to I donât want to give you IR in 3 weeks. I talked with my manager and asked hin to give me 1 month time. I interviewed internally and moved to a different org. I am not sure if this will help you, but for me this worked. Obviously this org was webxt.
Fuck MS. Only upside of MS is having it on your rĂ©sumĂ© to get something better. Coast it out while preparing for interviews and take severance. And donât give two hoots to not burning bridges. Nobody cares in the tech world. Itâs nasty, brutal and transactional.
I'll suggest start looking for a job, this is almost happening everywhere. They are targeting you for the next round of layoff. Also, give them a hint that something like this is not legal. That might scare them as everybody is scared of lawsuits. In worst case don't leave on your own, get severance
But if they are claiming performance as the ground for removing me, would they still offer severance?
Removing someone on performance grounds is not easy. They will need 2 IR for that. The way it works is that when higher ups asks for someone to lay off, they give your name. As per them, you are not performing. Marking someone as IR in connect helps them to build documentation for low performance. Timings of layoffs and your connects helps you to get severance in case 2 IR are not completed.
Shades of the old Microsoft where managing out was the norm. Whatever you do, don't quit as you will not be eligible for unemployment. Either get a transfer to a new team ASAP or start searching externally. My two friends who were managed out were offered small severance packages. They lawyered up and the money increased so they would go away.
Oh I didn't think about unemployment. Thanks for pointing that out!
Do you know how much more lawyer got them? Or was the value of the increase greater than the cost of the lawyer?
Is constructive dismissal a thing in your legislation? This looks pretty on the nose.
No idea
Do you feel depressed? If yes, go to a doctor and get notes for mental health leave. Then it will be unlikely for them to put you on pip while on leave.
But they may put you on laid off list. I wouldnât trust HR for reporting mental health issues.
I think there might be another team other than hr that's responsible for health leave.
They will manage you out either way. Fighting can just delay the process. Donât resign wilfully. You can counter and show proof of your contributions in writing. Try finding a new job till this goes on
DO NOT RESIGN/QUIT! You loose a lot of rights when you voluntarily quit. If you get laid off you can collect unemployment (itâs your own money your getting back) and if heâs truly harassing you⊠flip the script and start building a case against him I suggest you watch the movie âOffice Spaceâ again and keep doing the best job you can while also not giving a fuck of the consequences.
No one kept doing the best job they could in office space. Although they did not give a fuck about the consequences and escaped all culpability. So I guess that checks out.

I am starting to think Chinese interviewers currently fail non-Chinese candidates on purpose.
Wow! Which org? This is pathetic
