Being religious?

This is a question for the religious folks. I am not trying to be rude and have no intention of disrespecting it; but I am very curious how are you so involved deeply religiously. I recently visited a religious place of worship, I was so surprised at how strongly some of the folks were praying and it almost looked they were in a state of trance. What makes you believe in what you believe? Religious people can you voice your opinion. Non- religious- please be respectful.

Waste of time. Because there is no such thing called god.

How do know certainly?

If god can’t provide certainty how can you trust ?

You just have to believe. Have faith and pray and when you see what you have prayed for comes true makes you an even bigger believer

For that you don’t have to pray

Cadence Mariposa OP Nov 7, 2019

So you are saying, if I Pray for $10; I will get $10 this strengthening my belief and then I demand a million? Logic is flawed. I will work for that $10 and get it , which will strengthen my belief in my ability to make more.

Science killed religion for many...

Opposite is true

Easy to prove that praying does nothing. Are people that pray less likely to get cancer? To die in a car crash? Looks to me it'd be easy to just look at stats and see if praying helps or not

Doesn’t

It not entirely about praying and getting what you want

If i tell you this book just popped out of nowhere and tell you it is meaningless, would you belive it? How can you say that our dna that has a blueprint of our body, which is even more complicated than a book, just pop out of the blue?

Cadence Mariposa OP Nov 7, 2019

Are you for or against? I can't make anything out of what you said

Seriously can't tell if Nvidia is joking or not

Common man is fearful. Religion offers comforting lies. Some people are so afraid, especially when it comes to having no purpose, that they're willing to let an organization gut them financially. In addition, most of these people dont have much going for them. Bolstering the truth that their lives are meaningless.

Uber 2muchblind Nov 7, 2019

Most religions aren’t organizations and don’t require any gutting out financially. Also — if you say most religious people “don’t have much going for them” (and by that I think you mean financially, which is a very narrow way of looking at the world — as if the only measure of success is material goods!), then you could apply the reverse logic as well. That is, you could say that people that do “have a lot going for them” would rather not acknowledge any superior power. Because it’s hard on the ego.

I am not religious or spiritual so I cannot answer your question.

Cadence Mariposa OP Nov 7, 2019

I am similar to you

I identify as spiritual more than religious just because I don't follow all the Hindu customs. But I do meditate and pray regularly or do certain things that keep me connected to the supreme power that I believe in. I have seen positive transformations, such as experiencing joy and calmness in general. I was able to get through the worst times in life through the power of deep meditation. I guess we all need some anchor is life, and for spiritual and religious people, it's our faith in supreme power/god / whatever else you want to call which keeps us going

If it's placebo and helpful to you, then great. Just don't push it aggressively to others or draw lines in the sand against non believers. Also, don't mix it with politics. Religion's role should be kept in it's spiritual confines in this era where information is aplenty and people are hopefully smart enough to know they're being taken advantage of.

Sorry for my long reply earlier, and what better way to apologize than by writing another long reply. :) But to offer my thoughts on the original question you asked, I think having a deep, personal relationship with God over time leads to feelings of love and gratitude that can be very powerful. Granted, your word ‘trance’ makes me wonder what kind of service or function you were attending; for me, although at times my love for God can evoke some strong feelings, I personally wouldn’t say these feelings have ever pulled me into a trance. When I attend church service, I am there to think about whatever scripture or teaching is being presented, but I am also there to learn about God’s character, to apologize for the times I fall short of His ideal, and to pray for others, or for specific concerns of mine. It is a time of reflection, and my feelings of gratitude or love can be very deep (especially the older I get), as I can look back and see the many, many ways God has walked with me, often carrying me. It is that life experience that, when I was younger, led me to believe, and now, as I am (slightly) older, fuels my faith. I imagine people experience this in many different ways (if they do), and I suppose that passion or love could cause someone to appear entranced. Long answer to your question, hope it helps in some way.
