I think he misjudged the tone in that interview - probably not used to British mannerism. In my books he comes a winner though because he owned his failure, apologized publicly on Twitter and that too with a sense of humor.
Also, he realized early on that he has to be controversial and adversarial to make a name for himself in today's hyper-crowded media. No one knows about the logical, friendly centrists who actually have well researched arguments.
People like Shapiro and AOC are"voted in" by us, the media consumers. No use complaining now... π
