Just rolled off my first project as an Oracle developer and looking for a new one in my company. Really wanting to transition to a software engineering role and hoping to eventually get there by taking a project where I can use Java and/or JavaScript. Just had someone reach out to me to join a new project as an SAP ABAP Developer. I hadn’t heard of the language until just now. Should I take the role? Is it even a worthwhile language to learn? The project would be for a year.
OMG no, get away. I thought ABAP died in the 00's, too bad it didn't.
Thank you, guys! I’m going to try to turn it down and hopefully find a role that will be a better learning experience
Good luck! Hope you land something interesting and let us know.
Hell no, stay away from SAP. I once was on the receiving end of an SAP api call. They wanted me to rename some fields I'm sending to "field1" "field2" "field3". Literally that. I was totally flabbergasted. They couldn't rename their own fields so wanted me to rename my data fields when sending data to them.
That lines up with the stories I've heard. A whole lot of useless devs and even more of the trash code that they left behind.
