Everybody now wants to work at G or F. I think F and G have a future less bright than their present. Their only source of revenue is advertising, which is the single most fought thing by congress, society and overall regulations; Their cultures are somewhat imperfect: G is super slow and often fails to capitalize on new ventures, F is fast but not enough thoughtful, ending up screwing up bad sometimes. I know I'm exaggerating, and that G for example has very successful businesses like YT and GCP with the potential of diversifying their revenue from ads, that F is expanding into VR etc. But still, I feel like Microsoft but especially Amazon have a brighter future as companies. I'm especially interested in Amazon. They also have their regulation problems, but they have seen them coming for years and are much more prepared for them, they are literally expanding into every possible business with hugely successful outcomes, their stock grows like crazy, I think that they have a very good culture (at least business-wise). I know that nowadays F/G are better employers for several reasons, but in 5/10 years from now, would have been better to have spent 5/10 years at A or at G/F? IBM was once great to have on your CV, but having spent 10 years there in the recent past wouldn't have been the best choice. What do you think? I've also added some unicorns to the poll, the ones I think are interesting and have good potential for the future. #engineering #software #swe
It will always be Google
I think the only chance for Google to continue leading is if their autonomous driving effort really takes off. But I doubt it will be that massive.
Google has not diversified as vastly as Amazon, but they have the world's information in their pockets. They have been, are and will use it to build some of the most innovative products. Also keep in mind being the best FAANG also takes employee satisfaction into consideration by a huge degree
As a business, yea Amazon is killing it. But as a place to work it’s still subpar because of the culture, way they hire, fire, treat employees, the way their stock grants work. There are plenty of smaller companies that will probably see higher stock growth than amazon. But you’re right that among FAANG, their empire seems the most likely to continue to grow to a size that’s increasingly alarming for society.
Mmm disagree. G/F were able to offer huge benefits because their ads business was making a ston of money. G has already started cutting on some benefits. In the end, an employee is an investor. If your company succeeds and expands, as an employee you'll have opportunity to grow, RSU will increase in value, company will have money to afford benefits etc
So you think Amazon is going to stop uncomfortable PIP culture and start giving everyone awesome perks? They already have enough money to do this. G, FB, and others have had this culture since they began, they didn’t start improving as they got massive. Amazon will continue culture of frugality and ruthlessly cutting costs/employees to feed the machine.
Did you check G and FB earnings? Ads are still killing it. Worry not, the top decision makers are ready to pivot but it seems like the golden goose is laying more eggs than ever.
They'll do well, no doubt. Will they do as good as they have been doing in the last 10/20 years, compared also to other companies which are doing super well (and might be doing even better in the future)? Not sure.
Yes. They have accumulated a ton of cash and talent and can do whatever they want.
Still waiting for real amazon competition. Think they may have it in 10 years. Google will be relevant a long time. No one else is really even playing their game at near the same level. And I can’t see anyone investing enough to bother.
And their game is? I honestly can't think of a current google product that I actually like using anymore. Maps may be the last holdout, but even then it's not like I use it more than a handful of times in a month
I'm "pro Amazon" but G has tons of great products.
Amazon is in a very healthy place right now. So work at FB/Google and invest in Amazon. No reason to work in a shitty place now just because you think in 10 years it might become better.
This.
I feel that big companies can only get worse over time and their prestige rankings relative to each other should be pretty stable, assuming no big paradigm shifts, e.g a company comes out with an innovation like the iPhone.
Google for work, Amazon for stocks.

Having a successful cloud business is going to be THE major advantage for any company: so Amazon, Microsoft or Google.
Tend to agree. Consider having cloud, being the next walmart, having music and movie streaming, several other sizeable things... I just struggle to understand why it's not obvious that it's gonna be amazon
Oh, yeah I’d bet on Amazon too, barring regulation. We’ll all just be Amazon molecules in 5 years. VMware’s already in the shadow of Amazon now.
