Airbnb and Shopify recently announced that they will be letting employees work from anywhere and even up to 90 days outside the country. Airbnb said it would be making work visas easier to obtain. I am a U.S. citizen and not on a work visa. What are the companies with the best remote flexibility and the possibility of working overseas? Please reply in comments! Blind Tax: Do you need to ask? I work at CVS (🥜 x 0.25 x 😂) + shampoo discount
Isn’t cvs a decent place to work? At least for DS that’s what I’ve heard
Depending on what group you’re in, it can be a friendly place to work. At the extreme end, there are many engineers who do absolutely nothing all day, but have created a convincing facade that they are valuable. I don’t know if they are burnt out, or working elsewhere simultaneously, but I personally know of people with 0 work output. There is not a lot of room for career advancement, and there are too many intermediate engineering managers in place who add little value. They’ve started publishing different compensation ranges for different geographic areas, but in general, they are tied to the New England ranges, which are at the lower end of the spectrum. And, as is probably the case with many companies, their “merit” increases or raises were never keeping up, even when inflation was much lower.
What do you mean Shopify "recently" announced? It's been like this since 2020. Also, take the Destination 90 program with a grain of salt. Since the employment market flipped they've been very strict on timezone and recently some managers are setting a rule where you have to have a mimimum threshold of performance to get approved.
This is not true in general. I’m on a NA team where some of my teammates are doing D90 from Japan, Korea and Sweden.
Yeah, my teammates go back home to visit families and share updates asynchronously. When they're opening PRs and contributing, who cares. It'd be hard to lead any sort of project and you'd probably have to meet late/early to attend very important meetings. But in general, it's highly accepted in my work area.
Yeah, idk how much more remote friendly you can get than Shopify. They fly the team together to meetup in person about once a quarter which is great. That's optional and everyone is remote all the time. If you live in a big city (especially in Canada) you probably complain about how much you make. But if you live outside of expensive cities and actually take advantage of being remote, it's pretty nice.
