Joined Vmware on Feb 1st 2022. Now with the company getting sold to Broadcom, I'm super nervous of a layoff and I am on visa. If I leave Vmware before 1 year, I have to payback signonbonus with taxes. Should I wait until Feb 1st 2023 or when should I start interviewing and leave Vmware? What should be my strategy ?
You’re assuming you will get offered a space to stay or that the acquisition won’t close until after your one year. I don’t have to deal with a h1b, but if I did I would start looking now. You can use your new hire bonus from somewhere else to pay back vmware and be more secure.
Will they consider visa vs. GC or citizen when they prepare list to lay off?
Start preparing now, and line up interviews. There is time for the deal to close. Then, they would start to optimize business units (aka cutting down fat, aka layoffs). H1B means you need also make the transfer happen. Use the time now. Don’t optimize for your sign on.
How much time would you estimate we have at minimum?
Layoffs will start the day after the deal closes.
I am in the same boat except not on a visa. Would suggest interviewing now and get sign on elsewhere to pay back this one. Remember sign on pay back is prorated. You have about 6 months to find a new good gig so would start right away.
