And the sad part is that they promote and encourage people from IT service background over someone who has worked in product based companies throughout their career. And these mediocre and talentless managers actually insult engineers during sprint meetings. This behaviour is very different than product based companies. L4 at 15 yoe? Is this a mistake? If not i would like to read your story.
I am reading l4 as sde 2 btw
I think it's 5 yrs, not 15
For someone who is supposedly from a tier 1 college and worked in product based companies throughout their career, your TC and level is pretty low for your YOE. You just sound entitled with this kind of rant. There's no need to start another service and product company caste system. Someone's pedigree in terms of college and past companies matter less than you think. What matters more is shipping stuff, not being an asshole putting up artificial barriers between people.
I was not from tier 1 college or worked in product based companies from birth. I had to work hard for both of them. So this is really meritocracy rather than caste system. And yes, i can actually solve a leetcode medium in 20 min. I did that last year when I passed FB coding rounds and design rounds. I also have a decent ranking on codechef. So this is not something I get from birth or because of my lineage. I actually work hard for it.
Real software engineering is not solving LC puzzles. I can't believe someone can be this clueless at 15 YOE. Or did you make a typo there? Is it 1.5 yoe or 5 yoe?
This indicates managers are incompetent, their background doesn't matter. And also incompetent are the interviewers who hired them. They being from service or product background doesn't matter.
You will find similar story with Amazon SDMs and its fine. I have been working in best of the product companies and had a similar hate against the people from service companies. My major reason was i found most of these people as tight necked scrum rockstars who knew nothing more than status checks. However all generalisations are false. There are great guys everywhere. There are exceptional managers at senior leadership in service based companies if not good engineers. Remove that hate from your heart and just focus on yourself. You can hate one individual for what he is but don’t generalise.
I did not say I hate people working from service company. I am discriminating based on talent. Which is completely normal and happens all the time in a capitalist societies.
This is why people tend to move abroad.
Which team you're in?
Where were you working these last 15 yrs ? Which tier-1 college ?
NITs/old IITs, cant be more specific. As I said people with my background are a rarity in twilio india.
Are all service based managers like that? - No Is the median service based manager much worse than the median tier1 product based manager? - Big yes
Exactly, well put
Yes, right.
Which BU is this OP?

I have come from service based company, i don't understand the hate against service based company engineers. What do you mean by promote and encourage? Do you mean promotion? Some examples would help
Yes, there are good engineers in service based companies also. But they are exceptions and exceptions only prove the rule. Problem with twilio india is that 90% of talent has spent at least 4+ years in service based company and they are actually at top levels of management without working for even 1 year as an SDE in product based companies. Now you may tell me sde experience doesnt matter. True, but their behaviour is just unprofessional. They insult engineers during scrum calls. I had never experienced such a top down lala company managerment before.
This is not hating but discriminating on talent levels. Which is what your company also does. I am only saying levels should be decided on talent and impact. I talk respectfully to all my team mates whether from service or product background. Hell, I treat my kaamwali bai much better than how my service company lala manager treats me sometimes.
