Hows the big data for career growth and compensation in the future? Is it wise decision to change the domain from core backend (micro-services, API dev) to data engineering? I am currently working on backend role with >6 years of experience. I have below offers - 1. Adobe (L5 - senior, Big Data) - 330K TC Cons - Big Data engineering which is very different than my current role. Huge learning curve 2. Rivian - senior backend- 245K TC 185k / 220k RSU total Pros - Pre IPO Cons - too many EV companies 3. Thumbtack - mid senior backend - 300 TC Cons - down-leveled Pros - pre IPO, good eng culture More interviews coming up. Current TC 👎 6 yoe
What is your current TC? You have nice options and Adobe seems the obvious choice for TC and growth. It depends if you're looking for the challenge or have other priorities like WLB?
Current TC is less than 200. I am up for the challenge but also want to make sure after Adobe I would have good options in other companies. Big data teams are limited in every org compared to backend roles.
Adobe role looks like more responsibility, ask current DE at Adobe about the role if they don’t expect high performance early. Seems the obvious choice because of TC; and you can always return to SWE roles if you don’t like it.
That’s a good point. Did you mean move within Adobe or outside?
Outside - not sure how internal role changing works there.
As a previous TT eng, I’d say esp after last raise, stay away. Eng culture is decent but product is not growing, no product vision
Yes they recently doubled valuation. They are stepping into home improvement services which has great potential. Did you get to keep vested stocks? Or you have to be in the company during exit?
Home services has always been their biggest category. They recently pushed out and are expanding on a fulfillment model (as opposed to lead gen) which is promising. Just from my experience The company kept changing direction and had poor vision. They did have a generous options policy ( pre rsus) which was if you were with the company 2 years, you get 7 years to exercise. As for rsus I believe you keep them
Don’t know too much tbh, only what’s been in media. Plenty of risks. Not much trust in the company personally. Given the comp, the risk isn’t worth it with the other companies out there
Big data is harder than typical backend and hence you will improve your tc
Thanks but there are limited teams for big data and so opportunities. Agree?
Out of curiosity, what’s the RSU price that they gave you in thumbtack’s offer?
13$. Mind sharing your offer?
340 TC, which I took btw and don’t regret one bit ;) great culture, wlb and fully remote.
