Bigger role but no promotion

Finance Director 15 YOE I’ve been asked to take on a bigger role, ERP implementation as a sort of Product Owner / Finance Transformation Lead, which is expected to take most of my time. I ask what this will do to title and comp and got told that’ll be later… Now I’m being told the backfill for my role, who will report to me and I will oversee, will be hired in at a much junior level. Realistically, this means I’ll still be on the hook for a bunch of my old work. I don’t see how refusing the role will help me. I won’t get another chance for a while and at least it’ll tick another box on my resume. Got a meeting with the boss next week, how do I make clear I don’t want to be take advantage of?

Yeah don’t accept that. Time for promotion and raise is now, not later. Now is when you have the most leverage.

This is a good sign. At some companies you need to be in the role before you can be promoted. Take it in stride, accept the opportunity, and say that you’re willing to step up. If this backfill is a director or the same level as you- then that’s a sure way to know you’ll get promoted since HR typically doesn’t like the same level reporting into the same level. Be cautiously optimistic.

Hell no 🤨

Give me more, what do you mean hell no? Why not?

However, this does happen at many institutions. Perform first, get promoted later. You need to understand how genuine the promise is.

It doesn't always work that way. I've seen my employer take advantage of a trusting employee for 2 years, and finally their hired someone from the outside.

I would honestly just quit

I’d do this for 1 year or so and see how it shakes up Two things will happen: You’ll either get the compensation you deserve or You’ll get a lot of experience at a higher level to put on the resume which you can use to get a higher paying job at a company who respects you to pay you fairly

The experience isn’t going to pay for his lambo

Bigger role is great! Take it if it's worth it. But depending on your current TC, I'd advise you to start looking somewhere else. If you do not start the role with an increase, then an increase later may not happen or may not be up to what you expect and it will be difficult to negotiate then.

You going to be the scape goat for whoever is unhappy with the choice of the new system... And then on top of that have the pleasure of doing your current role as well lol

Or you'll be the scapegoat when, not if, everything goes pear shaped. ERP implementations are absolute nightmares. But you'll have to make sure you get a good implementation partner. Gimme a ping if you want to talk through it as I've done 4 of these.

Everyone will forget how to use the software about month after the implementation partner contract is up lol And then they'll blame OP Kidding somewhat, but not totally

If it's SAP run for the fucking hills. Or make sure you get a REAAAALLY GOOD SI.

Verizon nateleslie Sep 20, 2022

Make sure you are well supported meaning external consulting company and internal full team to get the implementation and testing work done

Do you trust you boss? Do you think they will give you that comp package when the time comes? It comes down to trust and HR/budget
