Long time Blind user/lurker but first time poster. I want to give a big shout to all Blinders for your accurate description of America. Me and my wife (a doctor) moved to the states slightly over a year ago, and we were already physically and mentally prepared for so much of what we experienced in America. Prior to our move, I read a lot on Blind that I frequntly thought were exaggerations but turned out to be accurate. First off, the ability to make money is off the charts here. The TC, as many Blinders say, is unreal. The same also goes for the health profession. Our HHI is $890K (320/570) this year and is expected to hit $950K to a $1M next year thanks largely to my wife. Number of opportunities in tech/healthcare are unbelievable, the level of innovation unparalleled and the access to capital is second to none. Willingness to take on risks is something worth emulating. - love the diverse workforce. One only needs to spend some time on Blind to see that most tech workers are from Asia. My wife reckons a similar scenario plays out in the medical field as well. Having the best and brightest in the world only makes America ultra competitive. A rising tide lifts all boats as they say. Now for the negatives (sorry Americans): - the healthcare is expensive, cumbersome and atrocious. The level of care varies from state to state and even within cities. I guess the high compensation goes some way to compensate for the really bad healthcare. I have heard a few tales from my wife’s friends on how accessing healthcare can bankrupt Americans. - level of violence is unsettling. I knew exactly what to expect from cities such as SF/Seattle /NYC/ Chicago etc. The level of homelessness is deeply troubling. - gun violence levels are outrageous. Enough said. - education system does not prepare students for jobs of the future. We quickly switched our kids from the public to private system. Again, we had to use that high TC to ensure our kids received quality education, something we take for granted back home. I really feel for the kids coming through the US public education system. The heavy reliance on immigrants is a consequence of a failed education system. While the food portions are humungous and cost efficient, once you add tipping it’s pretty similar to other advanced economies. Read many a post on why folks dont want to tip, but the fact that gig workers lack a minimum wage is deeply concerning. Plan is to spend X years in the states, before moving to our home for a better safety net/quality of life. I purposefully avoided mentioning my country of origin as I don't want that to be the topic of conversation. Moreover since everyone here is an American or an immigrant in America, one will want to defend their decision to be here. Net net, we are enjoying our time here as we get to explore a new country and culture. Americans are friendly and will always be a historical ally.
Your income and the income disparity in this country is part of the reason why we have such rampant homelessness
I would not mind a higher tax rate on those making very high incomes. Unfortunately, thats a problem for the Government to sort. I am with you on that
Absolutely false. Their income has nothing to do with other people suffering homelessness.
> education system does not prepare students for jobs of the future Can you cite some examples? Many people from elsewhere misjudge out system because they come from places where rote memorization is more highly prized over creativity.
as they say, if you understand you don't need to memorize
The linkage is debatable. I’ve seen some great students struggle with basic application in the lab because they don’t really understand, but have been regurgitating. Great place to see this at university is chemistry labs.
Your wife’s unreal income is also connected to healthcare costs! :)
My wife would gladly take a lower pay if it means more folks have access to high quality healthcare. Its obscene and not good for society
I call bullshit. Doctors are some of the greediest people.
OP cheers high paying jobs in healthcare. OP bemoans high cost of healthcare. :-)

Can't steal something that Americans aren't good enough for. Havent you read his post? I guess not. you've proven hid point. Lol
Sad part is a lot of people are in denial of the Healthcare problem.
It doesn't help that public education is getting constantly shafted. You got schools in weathier areas that look like colleges, while others feel like a prison.
Gun violence has reached epidemic levels 😞
It’s lower now than in the 70s lol
Is that a flex @amazon?
Fuck me do I ever hate this phrase. 🤮

Can totally relate to your issues. Have you ever faced any form of violence? Only asking cuz I’m trying to gather how many have experienced it vs the news.
No, I have not faced any violence to date
