I am curious to know what is the company culture like regarding internal transfers (to a different country). Is that something common or is it discouraged? Also, is remote work allowed? I have heard it was very hard to get such opportunity at Bloomberg.#swe
Internal mobility is good, especially if you are strong performer. I know of many people who have moved between various offices, NYC -> London, London -> Tokyo, etc. Company even pays for relocation (your stuff, and your family). As for WFH, it all depends on your team and generally (pre-covid) • 1-2 day a week wouldn't be a problem especially if you have good performance (lot of people in my team do it) • N weeks in a month will be a rarity. Mike strongly believes (and I have definitely benefitted) in serendipitous encounters, spontaneous conversations, networking, and generating ideas. Lots of office space, such as cool fish tanks and pantries, are designed for such interactions. I got to meet a few interesting people this way : • met someone cool talking about flowery tie he wears, • another one over admiring fishes, • another while getting hazelnut cream for the coffee, • other colleagues while sharing the same table in the lunch room..... All of them were in different departments, one was in ad sales (explained about different media we run and how we source ads), another was our Hollywood liaison (who explained how BB media is used in Hollywood movies). Mike even said "Excuse me" to me once as he went past me on the escalator 😅 How do you meet these people from totally different orgs without common shared physical space.
That sounds really good. Do you mind if i DM you for referral? 4 YOE!
Sorry can't refer someone who I don't know personally. Please look at our Careers website. Find open positions based on location. Refine further on any language specific constraints your have (e.g. C++, Java or python). Then shortlist further. Work on your CV to highlight key roles your performed in the 4yrs, what key skills, technologies you learned & used. Don't make the CV into a word soup of all the cool technologies you have read about etc. Instead divide into, what you have hands-on experience with vs what you're learning on the side. Make the CV a page or 2 if you can.
Internal mobility is widely encouraged even globally but make sure you’re doing it when there’s a role available to apply to in whatever country you’re looking at, otherwise it’s really tough to do. And also don’t just join a company because you think they’ll move you somewhere, it’s entitled and not fair to the company
Internal mobility is quite good. The company absolutely hates work from home though. Actively discouraged before covid.
Is covid changing WFH durably? Are people allowed to work from a different country inside a team?
Upper management is old school, I doubt it personally but hopefully I’m wrong
