Bloomberg to HFT career path

Hi Team, I currently have an offer from BBG as SSE and wondering what’s the career path looks like to end up at HFTs firms from BBG. Looks like on LinkedIn, many ex-BBGs have moved to HFTs. How soon you should start applying to these HFTs after u join BBG? Currently my team at BBG primarily uses Python not sure it that’s a disadvantage in this situation. I am asking this because a Citadel recruiter reached out to me and told me to take Bloomberg offer if I want to end up at HFTs Pls share your experience. go to their websites and then fill out their application forms. That’s what I did

Haha not everyone gets their interviews straight up, did u work at Bloomberg??

You’re not even at BB and you’re already looking to apply to HFT? You can apply whenever but having less than 1 yoe at BB likely isn’t going to give you any edge over any other candidates

Why is it wrong to plan for future ambitions?

Virtu Financial manttiss Nov 25, 2022

Nothing wrong with that but OPs tone sounded to me like they think a quick stint at Bloomberg and would make much of a difference in making it to HFT

What is the context of Citadel recruiter reaching out to you and telling you to take Bloomberg offer? Did you apply to Citadel and mentioned Bloomberg offer in the conversation?

Broadridge Pgupt OP Nov 25, 2022

Out of no where reached to me on LinkedIn and asked me if I am interested in pursuing an opportunity at Citadel. However that opportunity is for SRE role not SWE. So that’s why asked him what would be more faster path to be at HFTs for SWEs roles

Broadridge Pgupt OP Nov 25, 2022

@Bregerton Do u mind sharing ur experience of getting calls from HFTs while working at BBG?

Lol either your Cit recruiter was capping or you misinterpreted. I’ve worked at at two of the HFTs you tagged and neither gave a shit about whether or not you work at Bloomberg. My assumption is that your recruiter was saying Bloomberg was a better look than broadridge. Which it obviously is, but there’s nothing special about Bloomberg- it’s just a company with a higher engineering bar, so it generally produces more promising candidates. We’d just as easily interview a Meta or Uber candidate.

Thanks for ur response. However I was discussing which offer to pick from the current ones, Amazon vs Bloomberg, also I have HC approved Google but no head counts for this year. In this situation, that recruiter suggested to take BBG offer, he also mentioned there are teams in the BBG which have high conversion rate to HFTs especially Citadel. Btw assuming I am still at Broadridge is a noob assumption.

Bloomberg yixlo Nov 26, 2022

yeah I could see that for hedge fund side but you definitely wanna work CitSec (marketmaking) side if you can. I’d rejoin BBG over a few of the worse teams at Citadel lol

Bloomberg 🥸 <GO> Nov 27, 2022

Citadel poaches Bloomberg Engineers for their NXT program which is shitty. Working at citadel is in general, shitty. To answer your question, I was getting pinged from all minus Akuna after a few months of working. To answer your other question, these firms only care if you work with low latency C++ so if you’ll be using Python just go to Google.

Broadridge Pgupt OP Nov 27, 2022

Thanks for your response. Some hfts like HRT uses Python and have positions like Python Developer. I am not sure if these can match better with ur work at BBG if u are using Python Also, what are some of the teams at BBG which work on the low latency stuff
