I am using someone else's account (so I don't work at Google, ignore that). I have worked at T-Mobile in the Seattle area for about 9 months. I have offers from both Amazon in Seattle and Bloomberg in NYC. Amazon L4 TC:155k (not AWS, likely some team in ordering/fulfillment) Bloomberg New Grad TC: 190k Some background: I'm a girl in tech. I grew up in the Seattle/Bellevue area and I was excited for a move to NYC. However, at the same time I have heard bad things about Bloomberg's legacy systems (and reliance on C++). Also maybe Amazon is more prestigious in name(?) and potentially has better opportunities career wise, but they also eat their engineers alive. Opinions? Which one should I pick? #amazon #bloomberg #newgrad #career #tech #offer #womenintech #seattle #nyc
Negotiate with amazon ask them to match offer
I should have mentioned, amazon is staying firm at 155k and chalking it up to differences in NYC being much more expensive.
Are you prepared to walk away from Amazon? In that case you have nothing to lose. Tell them match and youâll sign otherwise it sounds like youâre happy going to nyc anyway. Either way you win :)
Are you from UDub? I think NYC is good for visiting, not necessarily the best for engineers or females
I went to Wash U in St. Louis, but I grew up in Seattle.
@OP as another poster said, play hardball back, and ask Amazon to match and youâll sign, otherwise youâll walk away. Bloomberg is still a great name. And if you got through at Amazon once, you can go back in a year or two for SDE2
Getting back in amazon as an SDE2 is much harder. So don't count on returning back to Amazon.
I would state the same as @Coldwell mentioned. I work at GS and I have interviewed and know friends at both Bloomberg and Amazon. Both companies have their own cons. Amazon expect worst WLB and you only get the benefit of your pay & RSUs if you stay for 2+ years (some weird split). Bloomberg is a nice office but as a tech you would be less respected in this domain plus both companies are bad in WLB. I would still choose Amazon & may be switch after 1+ YOE at Amazon
Go for the highest TC. In the meantime do a little LC after work. Congrats, a lot of people would love to be in your shoes right now.
Amazon has a forced attrition policy for software engineers, wherein the bottom 6% in every dept are fired no matter what (even if only 2-3% actually deserve it). And the bottom 10% are put on "dev list," so they are under threat of being fired. This makes for a lot of stress and nasty politics, according to a few friends who have worked there. Imo it's a no brainer to pick Bloomberg in this case, especially given the comp difference. Roughly half of Bloomberg devs don't work in C++ at all. Less than 2% have ever touched Fortran.
I am not sure why Cpp is a bad thing, especially in NYC.
Agreed, but a lot of people don't want to work in it for whatever reason
Whoa 190 TC? Is this including signing bonus?
Nah, they didn't give me a signing bonus
Great offer for a new grad!
Why are the only people seriously recommending Bloomberg also employees of Bloomberg.. Bloomberg has decades-old outdated technology, theyâve been working on migrating their old FORTRAN code for over 10 years, lol. WLB is great because your coworkers will be unambitious older crowd just there to collect the paycheck. Itâs a terrible place to be for growth early in your career. Bloomberg TC may seem high but when you consider state + city tax and vastly higher cost of living in NYC, Amazon could actually be better. NerdWallet says 155k in Seattle == 250k in NYC which seems exaggerated to me but run the numbers yourself and make your conclusion. Amazon âbrandâ is a bit better than Bloomberg for tech, as Amazon is an actual tech company. Brand name is anyway less important. The main reason for Amazon is that you have a lot more growth potential and ability to jump to other FANG later.
Hasty generalizations all over the place. You are just using outdated arguments. Company is moving on and we hire a ton for entry-level positions. We use open source. Latest language features. New languages. A lot of meetups and tech talks. You will learn a lot and you will be learning for a couple of years. But don't let your guard down, LC is needed. If you don't make it to management in Bloomberg, you are f'ed career wise. Also jumping to FANG is as easy to do from Bloomberg. The hard part is cracking the interviews.
Outdated arguments? Not as outdated as your tech đ
I chose Bloomberg over Amazon. Best decision! Iâm so happy in BBG whole life is hell in Amazon! Never go to slavery company like Amazon. Could tell more detail if you want.
Please do tell, did you actually work at Amazon? Every company have their cons. But I like to hear real people's experiences.

Update: Trans Coworker Stealing Breast Milk
Bloomberg can be chosen at this stage for better WLB and NYC. Just donât get too attached to it, as it might not be a good choice for the long term. Amazon will open more doors in the long term, and perhaps provide richer large scale systems experience
