Google engineers are regarded as some of the best in the world. Which makes me wonder how it can possibly hire someone I used to know as an Engineering Manager. This person didn't have a technical background, but went through a boot camp and got a job working on a no-code platform. I thought the job suited this person since it didn't require a lot of comp sci knowledge to produce working applications. However, this person likes to boss coworkers around and constantly created dramas in the team. It got so bad that half the team requested transfers to other teams. A yr later, I got a LinkedIn notification that this person is starting a new job in Google as an EM. I was in disbelief. This person was barely able to write any code. Just a year earlier I was showing this person how to write simple sql queries. There is no way anyone can progress enough to pass a system design interview in a bottom tier company, let alone Google. So how can such a person get into Google? I have no doubt this person can BS about impacts and leadership qualities. But it would be hard to fool any experienced interviewers. #google #engineeringmanager
Sometimes people act dumb to lower expectations and to be lazy. When they’re in special circumstances, they can turn it on and be a completely different person. Or they’re just sleeping with someone.
You jealous bro?
I stopped reading after reading your first statement. Google or any tech company engineers are very far from being the best in the world. We are just product monkeys
Don’t you disrespect a Googler like that. Respect your superiors.
There’s really talented people who are better than people at google. One is really relegated to googles proprietary ways. There’s a plethora of things one will never be exposed to working exclusively at any one place.
It’s impossible to fake it into a Google EM job in core engineering roles. However your friend could be in Solutions engineering, Support, or various other customer facing. It still engineering roles where managers with good people and leadership skills can do well without the deep technical expertise expected of engineering managers. And the friend could be passing off as an “EM” on LinkedIn without actually lying.
This makes a lot of sense. It's a shame that Google doesn't differentiate these roles.
Google has literally thousands of EMs. Many of them are terrible.
Some ….may be…..but these are the best of the best. Managing top notch engineering talent is no joke .
Let's step and think about what Google truly believes in when they hire employees. Reflect on Google's values. Have you done that?
Yes I did. Many companies are looking for candidates with a high slope (career trajectory) over y-intercept (current skill level). In this person's case, the slope is there but the y-intercept is so low it will take years to get to a level of an engineering manager. On top of that, there are many personality red flags, such as over confidence, rudeness and a general disregard for authority. If these are what Google is looking for in an engineering manager, then it's not a good place for engineers.
Google and Microsoft largely shaped the interviewing shit show we have today with the arms race to hire “the best” through vetting people through brain teasers, math problems, and now LC. Anyone can game it. Where as if you have an interview process where you sit someone down and have an adult conversation about their resume/experience, technology depth, and work approaches, you can just have one basic take home assignment to see if they can code and spend the rest of the time on design, cultural fit, and technical team match. You know…how the rest of the world interviews candidates.

Actually I am a little. But what bothers me more is that I would still want to work there one day.
