More than half my team got laid off. My boss called to chew me out for underperforming less than a week later. I actually pushed a lot of code and had positive feedback from peers. When I told my coworkers what happened, they told me the same thing happened to them too. Depressed af now. TC: 190k
At Google ?
Red flag 🚩 manager. He’s saying everyone is underperforming? Maybe he should better sell your team, and impact upwards. If his whole team is “underperforming” maybe he’s the root cause 🤔…
Or maybe he's expecting the same output with half the team because he's not able to accept the situation (which is effectively a demotion)
Anyone saying their manager is the reason they underperform is always going to use excuses for their bad performance. This coming from someone where most of my managers have been crappy. But I do find it odd that half the team got laid off and they still have 2 underperformers? So either the manager is bullshitting to boost productivity, the team was complete shit, or they only took salaries into account when laying people off.
Which product area? Perhaps manager knows something (e.g. round 2 layoff) and is trying to push you to look externally OR transfer out.
Might be a warning.
You guys need to organize because the boss is trying to fish for more info to fire more. Have concrete demands on what exactly is reasonable for a given length of time.
Won’t work. Once the train is moving, it ain’t gonna stop 🛑 Best to start looking quick.
Your manager is likely one of those silly ppl who think if they work hard now and show results they’ll be spared.
Oh boi..sounds like Google is preparing for layoff round 2.
Managers have no say in layoffs. 2nd round will def happen, but that’s irrespective of the post. My guess is everyone feels there are higher expectations now since psychological safety is gone, and this manager knows they’re only as good as results produced by reports. Hence, gaslighting team members into thinking they’re low performers for a boost in productivity.
Which is ironically the exact opposite of how you get good performance out of your team.
It seems like google is the new amazon
Everyone be stressed af now
