Overall TC in levels.fyi for a SWE in Greater Boston is lower compared to NYC, Bay Area, Seattle, and Austin. Just a bit surprised since Boston is also considered HCOL. Decided to make this thread to gauge Boston area TC TC: 138 YOE: 1 #amazon #google #akamai #hubspot #draftkings #rapid7 #tripadvisor #whoop #mathworks #redhat #logmein #nvidia #salesforce #wayfair #ptc #toast #grubhub #datadog #microsoft #reddit #stripe #chewy #irobot #cargurus #klayvio #ramp #intersystems #capitalone #libertymutual #vista #athenahealth #ibm #fidelity #smartbear #putnaminvestments #retailbusinessservices #statestreet #nasdaq #whoop #adobe #wayup #vmware #pnc #dropbox #takeda #broadinstitute #ey #slalom #johnhancock #siemens #verily #affirm #signify #izotope #peapoddigitallabs #bose #aws #spotify #drizly #crowdstrike #bain #cisco #dassaultsystèmes #dassault #figma #mastercard #draper #meta #facebook #pegasystems #audible #databricks #twitter #coinbase #liveramp #ginkgobioworks #square #apple #oracle #netflix #confluent #robinhood #staples #cadencedesignsystems #vmware #datarobot #roku #atlassian #intel #mitre #kayak #compass #shopify #pathai #verizon #jellyfish #wellingtonmanagement #dell #doordash #skillsoft #pluralsight #2u #alteryx #crunchtime #bullhorn #blackrock #fuze #imprivata #vertex #acquia #dynatrace #massmutual #zipcar #formlabs #cvs #benchling #smartsheet #airbnb #boston
I tend to chalk it up to the employers in Boston. Apple, Google, Microsoft, etc. have presence to be sure, but the biggest employers of SWEs are Fintech and Biotech if I had to guess. And I just don't think they comp on the same level.
I think the average is probably just lower in Boston because there are a lot of industries that don't pay as much like defense, biotech, and other non-tech companies that hire SWE. When you look at tech companies though most of them are paying the same rate. I know for a fact Netflix and Facebook pay the same in Boston as they do in SF. TC: $310k YOE: 10 LOC: Boston metro area Currently interviewing around for a new role and I anticipate getting at least a 30% bump, probably a lot more though.
whats your yoe? 310 number without the number of years you have does not matter.
Updated. Also worth noting I haven't changed jobs recently so I know I'm underpaid at the moment.
Amazon, datadog, salesforce, google, hubspot would be the ones who can pay ~ 400k for mid senior levels.
Hubspot doesn’t pay close to 400
This is backed up by levels.fyi: https://www.levels.fyi/t/software-engineer Boston area is definitely depressed especially at the higher end. I agree there are fewer jobs for the known highest payers, but in my limited experience Boston still compensates well for those positions. We just have a glut of semiconductor, medical tech, defense, etc jobs that most people are working that drags it down.
YOE 1.5 TC 170k
TC: $90k YOE: 5 Been interviewing with a few companies, the average base for a mid size company seems to be in130k-160k range.
Wht would be the TC range based on your experience?
Companies base pay ranges on cost of labor, not cost of living.
Boston is still considered MCOL unfortunately. The bright side is if you move a few miles away from Boston, it gets much more affordable (at least real estate wise)
Curious which areas you’d have a look at if you were in the market for a house?
TC: 130k YOE: 1 How common are jobs that pay 150k+ base with 3 YOE in Boston (preferably remote/hybrid)? I'm aware that there are better cities for tech but I like living here.
In Boston (but all allow remote from what I understand): Datadog, Meta, Google, Amazon, Toast, HubSpot, Wayfair, Capital One to name a few. Honestly I've got to imagine most competitive tech companies would pay that much. Cimpress used to be decent for the Boston area but has gone down hill a lot in the last 6 years. Many many more if you are looking for full remote.
I think you can add Athenahealth and Draftkings to that list too!
Yes I am always surprised why Boston swes get paid like folks in MCOL.
