Boston vs Bay Area

Ok so I was extensively interviewing since the last 3 months. I currently have offers from 3 companies. ServiceNow, Docusign and Gemini Crypto. My dilemma is different. I was in the process of buying a house here but 2 of these roles are located in the Bay Area. Gemini being completely remote. Docusign currently has the highest TC 200k. I was also close to an offer for 150k at Chewy in Boston but didnt work out in the end. I am just confused on whether it makes sense to move there with such high cost of living and a complete rat race of a life. However I have more friends and family out there compared to here. My wife’s company is located here and it might be difficult for her to start looking for a job. My brain is just dead. I am also interviewing at Netflix in Bay Area. Is it worth moving out there ? Current TC 110k YOE 5

It’s getting closer to winter so visit Boston. It’s more fun at the winter. But at any other time of the year the Bay Area is better. Definitely worth it. Remote roles have no cute girls to hang out with in person. Not easy to get super motivated to do field shaping work unless that’s the case. Unless you’re a culture fit at fb where you work better isolated or something

He has a wife

Sde or sdet role in those companies? If your wife is also in tech bay-area has much to offer. Opportunities, Higher TC, Good weather, lots of things to do.

SDET roles. Both service now and docusign agree i am at the top of P3/IC2 and will be Senior in less than a year

Great, if your wife is in tech she can get job easily, if not Boston is good option. As Bay area is bit expensive compared to Boston and housing market is boomed makes owning house next to impossible.

Get a counter from MathWorks and stay?

MathWorks Mathwrker6 OP Aug 17, 2021

I highly doubt they do counter offers.

I don’t know much about docusign but it doesn’t seem great to move @ 200k TC for it given your other considerations. If you need a chance of pace then Gemini/remote could work for awhile. Google Cambridge is also there. Boston seems great. My two cents.

Nothing wrong with wanting to stay in Boston and holding that as a constraint. Do you feel an excitement about moving?

No chance of buying a house on a 200k salary in the Bay Area unless you have 500k to put down in cash. I love the Bay Area but you got to make way more money to feel comfortable. I’m at 1.4 mil this year and it doesn’t seem like enough here.

Where are you now, and did you already try negotiating for remote at Docusign?

MathWorks Mathwrker6 OP Aug 17, 2021

I am in Boston. Do you know if new hires are staying remote ?

MathWorks Mathwrker6 OP Aug 17, 2021

The TC will definitely change with Boston but i am not sure if they are ok with it being remote permanently

DocuSign CRmW43 Aug 18, 2021

Yeah, probably. Depends on the manager. Try negotiating and see where it goes.
