Did some research on box truck fleet business. Seems to be profitable if you have reliable drivers and good insurance. From my calculations, if you invest 70-80k then you can own 2-3 box trucks and each can give you return of around 6-7k/ month after everything. Can someone with prior experience shed some light? Had relative who had a few truck/trailer and it seemed like a good idea. But they couldn’t find reliable drivers. One driver kept crashing the truck (I heard he reversed into a electricity pole.. and another time hit a parked car.. luckily no one was hurt but insurance went 📈). Another driver said hours were too long, couldn’t make their deadline and that it was too hard. He gave up after few months. In the end they sold the truck and trailer. The bigger companies who does this seems profitable so if you can find reliable drivers should be a good source of income. (But in this market everyone is struggling to find drivers)
Finding drivers not easy. There is a labor shortage right now.
I thought of doing the same with big rigs but thought about drivers as well, now even worse. My best friend went to school to get his CDL but found all the entry positions are long haul. Local (return home each night) jobs get taken up by the most experienced and tenured. So he gave up trying but did get a job driving for a non-emergency ambulance service given he was also an EMT.
Why I would say no: Non-tech enabled business I have no expertise to contribute that would give me an edge. I would imagine the perfect operator is an experienced driver who figured out how to borrow $70k, not one of us.
Maybe opportunity for innovation is in finding and retaining reliable drivers? Can you build a schedule that allows parents to work around childcare? Or maybe provide childcare somehow? Or maybe assemble full time equivalent coverage from a number of college students with different course schedules?
These are some great ideas. Thanks
Honestly, someone who has the fortitude and reliability as a long haul truck driver can make more money in other jobs.
Are trucks available? I heard from my cousin who is into trucking that new/old trucks are not available in market and the one’s available are very pricey. Then comes the issue for getting drivers, dispatch etc.
You could rent out box trucks for Google interns to sleep in, in the Google parking lot.
Yeah, make that a startup. Like the company that fills your gas in the employee parking lot.
