Everyone knows about the terrible WLB already, but I work at FB ads and I’m familiar with the grind and rat race already. 1. Do you need to be able to speak Chinese to be successful? If you can’t speak Chinese (or pretend you’re not fluent) can you avoid the 11pm meetings with Beijing? My Chinese is only at an elementary level. 2. Are there any repercussions if you push back on your workload and take PTO? Is there a PIP culture and are people at risk of being fired if they try to set personal boundaries? 3. I live in SF and I’m not keen on commuting to Mountain View. Is there an SF office? I hate WFH and remote work, I need to go into an office to be productive. TC 400k, not a software engineer
Join join! You will regret not joining soon! We going to ipo soon! 🚀🚀🚀🤑🤑🤑 WLB is not an issue here. You can get by without speaking Chinese. No meetings with Beijing. No Pip culture
HR
I’m not HR. If he wants to join, let him join! No regrets. 🚀🚀🚀🚀🤑🤑🤑🤑
1. YES, NO, OK 2. YES, NO 3. NO? OK
I worked at FB ads before and I don’t think you should join. You will thank me
Don't join here. It'd be a terrible decision if you decide to join.
Does leadership have any plan to address some of the issues that plague employees? It seems like attrition rate is really high.
That's the primary issue. The leadership suck blood from us with zero remorse. We have constantly been complaining about work life balance, not being remote friendly and how anti employee welfare, this company has been. But it only goes to the deaf ears. We had our all hands couple of weeks back, where we had this AMA session. As usual couple of them were about burnouts, remote flexibility and WLB. Our dear HR leader was like, we should all be feeling lucky that we have got an opportunity to work for a company like ByteDance, instead of complaining about these issues. It was just baffling.
ABC has more advantages than other groups in tiktok
In what way? I’m ABC but I can’t speak or read Chinese to save my life.
I cant either, imo it works out in my favor cause i dont ever have to talk to the china team. Problem here, imo, is mostly that leadership doesnt care the employees if they get stuck on a bad team
Yes
Telling interview candidates from FB to not come here. One came, regretted it, went back to FB after 4 months.
What was his level at tiktok and previous level at FB?
Anyone here know about the Ads Monetization Technology team? I'll be doing my 2nd round interview for a Frontend Engineer position in a couple of weeks. Was wondering if anyone here is from that team and can share more about the projects they've done.
Did you join Tiktok?
No 🥲 I stopped the interview process after getting scared off by the comments here, and after chatting with some other people I know at Tiktok. I do love the product, but everyone is burned out.
Thanks for reply! Are you in tech and non-tech? May I ask what range of TC they offered you? I’m in an offer position with them for a non tech role
1. Fluent Chinese will definitely help. I get around without speaking any 2. In my team we arange our PTO to avoid overlaps of critical people for long periods. Taking 1-2 days here or there was never an issue. I have not heard of anyone PIPed. Boundaries are respected as much as you respect them yourself, it's not as easy to stop responding after 5pm, but definitely doable
Thanks for answering! Are documents and documentation written in Chinese? I’m an ABC and can’t really read and write, I look very much Chinese but will people assume I’m fluent and just speak to me in Chinese?
I am in the same boat, ABC and i don't know any chinese. Doing ok so far. If your first name is english then they will know and speak english to you. I also know many ABCs that only speak english. You're not alone.
