I was thinking about getting into HFT one of these days My career has involved a lot of shaving microseconds off latency numbers and dealing with nanosecond timings on consumer devices, where we have to deal with the incredible difficulties added by mass production and packaging something up for non-technical people to use HFT honestly sounds insanely easy. You don't have to mass produce the system, and you'll have yourself or a technician sitting there within arm's reach the whole time it's operating. (And to respond to your objection: If you ship a million game consoles or phones with a show-stopping bug, it'll cost your company just as much as a bad HFT bug.)
Shaving microseconds off latency numbers is a small part of the job. The job is to develop software and solve problems at a high enough quality and quantity with limited time, so that your company can consistently move faster than others at capturing market opportunity, in an industry that already moves very fast. Not to say you can't do it, just that shaving off latency numbers isn't the right characterization of HFT software development.
