I’m an CS student with 3 previous internships 1 at Microsoft, 1 at Fortune 500, 1 at a large Canadian tech company and a TA position and can’t land any interviews or assessments for a summer 2024 internship at all. I can share my resume but it’s a standard ATS passing overleaf template everyone uses with quantified bullet points and projects, with my experiences, in a variety of tech stacks. The only non automatic OAs I got were we’re back in October/November from Stripe, Figma, Salesforce, and Sentry. Sentry shut down the opening after I passed the OA. Figma reached headcount in between the interview process. Salesforce ghosted me after I aced there OA in half the time. And I didn’t move past Stripes technical screen. As for the automatic OAs, I got 100% on some, and missed the bar on most, those are far too competitive for me unfortunately as I balance work and school. (Roblox, IMC trading, etc.) I know it’s a fallacy, but I have no more motivation to leetcode as I have no prospects, in all honesty. I’m 0/7 for emailing Meta university recruiters, 0/6 with Microsoft and 0/3 with Amazon and 0/3 with Apple I’ve emailed other intern recruiters at Tesla, Intuit, Confluent, MongoDB, Lyft, Ripple, Atlassian, Adobe, Hubspot, Okta, etc I’ve had referrals for Intuit, Amazon, Okta, Microsoft, Google, etc and no luck. If you were a cs student in my shoes, what would you do at this point? How do I ensure I don’t spend my summer unemployed? #tech #softwareadvice #advice #cscareerquestions
Apply to every company not just well known tech. It’s extremely competitive this year and already late for summer 24. High demand slots are already filled.
Unfortunately I have been, there’s a GitHub link now for all internships that I check daily sometimes multiple times for new internships. Problem is I think everyone does the same. I’ve been applying to everything since august, heard back initially, but new postings are almost non existent now. I know others have gotten success after reaching out to individuals to get their previous applications looked at.
You said it yourself, it’s exactly what everyone’s doing. Look for jobs on other unpopular platforms. My bf’s in the same position as you and he applied to Canada-based NEW 20ish postings just last week and some weren’t even posted on LinkedIn or Indeed yet. And he’s already scheduled for 2 interviews. Try to get ahead by applying rly early.
Keep applying to whatever you find online. There’s an oversupply of SWEs for limited job openings.
Intern budgets got slashed at a lot of places. We have 1/5 the usual number of reqs

Just pick up a random Fortune 500 intern job or even at know name place, he’ll or hang with friends for a summer for once.
How would I just pick up a random Fortune 500 intern job, that’s kind of what I’ve been aiming for lol. I could hang with friends but idk this is my junior year summer, this was supposed to be the internship that would hopefully give me a new grad offer :/
I just exactly fit the bill of your scenario .. Especially the point where there's absolutely no motivation to be consistent when you have nothing in hands.. its a really tough phase for most of us :(
Unfortunately this is only the start of ups and downs. Undoubtedly you will eventually get a job and make a decent career to only get blindly dropped by your employer— then you’re in the same boat except now you have more bills a family and probably higher COL and people to support…..and there’s the same limited jobs for an over saturated market of SWEs because every corporation is doing the same thing to make its greasy CEOs and board members that much richer while we all fight for the white collar scraps.
Not your fault. Market is very tough now for fresh grads. What is your area of expertise? I will recommend pivoting to AI if you are in other areas. That is the main hot area now. I had a few years experience in backend, pivoted to AI in 2022 and had a lot of interview calls. Ended up joining G
How would you recommend pivoting?
Listen, you need to LC like crazy and then apply to quant hedge funds. The hedge funds are hiring a lot but you need to pass their technical assessment which is extremely competitive.
if it’s that competitive then are they actually hiring a lot? it sounds like they’re hiring a select few who can pass their interviews
Yes but at least they are actually hiring new grads and it is plenty by absolute number. Most companies don’t have any new grad headcount that’s why OP gets rejections

how many applications have you sent out? it’s common to send hundreds, and you might need to cast a wider net. I ended up doing that despite graduating from a highly ranked school. I wasn’t hearing back so I just applied everywhere. it’s a numbers game
Agreed, I’ve probably sent out a little over 100 Canadian applications for summer 2024 and probably 180 or so American applications. I don’t bother applying to American places that don’t sponsor. Agreed, it is a numbers game. Although I’ve noticed individuals with almost no experience hearing back from large companies through career network programs like colorstack and etc. Has anyone heard of these?
