This is only the beginning.. "There is nothing 'transformative' about using The Times's content without payment to create products that substitute for The Times and steal audiences away from it," the Times said. https://finance.yahoo.com/news/ny-times-sues-openai-microsoft-141457134.html
Times is a dying company looking to get some viewers by shock articles. Nothing of substance here
Suing for billions of dollars and asking for banning chat-bot style products entirely. If there are more, the lawsuit can be more than the valuation of OpenAI
Big companies are being sued left and right all the time. In fact, anyone with money is constantly being sued. Nothing news worthy here.
Do you really think Open AI, Microsoft, and their lawyers and investors did not think this would happen?
^^ this. Even the smallest of smallest products, hell even the smallest of customer facing messages or images have to go through legal review, for a company this size. They definitely anticipated it and are ready..
I doubt it, they bought openai in the blink of an eye after the launch of chatgpt. Hell they didn’t even think much about buying it, just hype chasers
News by nature is public. You pay for it by paying for the newspaper or reading free articles with ads on websites. Times don't have a strong case here.
Not if it’s under paywall.
Facts are public. The gathering of those facts into a cogent story is protected IP.
Not just Microsoft https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/12/technology/google-antitrust-cases.html
I hope NY Times gets decimated.
Time to start blogging about random niche technical topics so that when the inevitable royalty deals start rolling in you can cash in.
“GOogLe mOveS sO slOw” One of the reasons might be to avoid being sued for billions of dollars 🤷🏻
Still worth it. Don't ask for permission, ask for forgiveness is how you change the world.
Does that implicitly mean Goog ll have more HC in 2024

Can they sue search engines too? Search engines also steal their contents and make a product out of it. Edit: It's well understood search engines bring in traffic. The question isn't "should they", but rather, "can they". If you need something to picture the scenario. Imagine you operate a website that dropped to irrelevancy, like MySpace. Might as well sue to get a payout for "stealing" their data over the years when the site was hot, right?
Search Engine is a collection of bluelinks that lead to the discovery of the original sources. It does not make any contents
Search engines craft the relevant searched content into personalized ads and those chatGPT summaries
