Berkeley MIDS program

Has anyone in data science heard of the Berkeley Masters of Information and Data Science? It is ranked as the #2 online MIDS program but I am not sure how it is viewed in the industry. It’s a fully remote program that takes about 20 months and costs $60k. Would love to hear from anyone in Data Science about whether this masters program is worth it. Should I apply? TC - 130 Edit: I have been coding in Python for 3 years (self taught) and am already fluent in all ML Data Science stuff (through ensemble modeling, dimensionality reduction, etc). No DevOps or MLOps skills yet.

I just graduated from there a year ago! Feel free to ask me anything!

Did you have a job at the same time? I am thinking of doing the more full-time option of 12 months so it feels more MBA-like. Did you know anyone who did this?

Yes I worked through the whole thing! It was really difficult but I was fully remote and my boss was pretty chill. If you want federal student loans you have to take a minimum of 2 classes a trimester. If you're doing another funding method you can take just 1, which is way better because some of the classes are super chunky

What did you do your focus in? Current area of expertise is ML, I’m pretty fluent short of neural networks so wondering how much value add there is

I passed out of some of the initial courses so I ended up taking a lot of the electives and did a more general focus as needed extra classes. My capstone was focused on Gans and vqaes. It’s pricey for sure but the network and faculty is awesome. I had professors that were researches at Google and nvidia , and also others that where directors/executives in the industry which helped get a more realistic expectation on everything.

60k for online classes is too high Check Masters on Coursera from other universities, they are arround 20k

I thought about that, but I feel like the getting a Berkeley education is helpful for landing a good role

Seems like a massive waste of money, esp for someone who has strong knowledge in the area If I’m going to do an online MS, I’m going Georgia tech. Name is just as good, and $10k total
